First let me introduce myself, my name is Maximus and I am WIS but I'm comfortable with it smile

I have a very modest collection at the moment comprising of an Omega SMP Bond and a Japy. I feel it's time to acquire something a little special and have been looking at either a Rolex Seadweller/Sub LV or one of the JLC Master Compressor range.

What wuould you go for and why?

I've also seen a Master Compressor Memovox with a faulty alarm and just wondered whether anyone knew how much JLC would charge to fix it alongside general service of the watch?

In terms of value, what would a watch in good condition with a working alarm be worth (both on a JLC bracelet and on a leather strap).

Tried on a JLC MC alarm saturday funnily enough - and was gutted as it was too big for me. It made the £4200 chopard mille speed black look cheap ! I really like that range. I'd probably chop my rolex in for one of the smaller versions if it didnt have so much sentimental value.

I'd be interested to hear owner views on servicing and how they hold their money. Theres a nice JLC MC on the classifieds at the minute. Thats what got me looking.

i have just got myself a JLC Master compressor and am in love with it! px'd an explorer against it, if money/amount of probable wear time wasnt an issue i would have kept my explorer as it was a very nice watch, superbly finished but the JLC is imho a step up within my price range. there are some specific rolex i would still love if i could justify the money but i wouldnt wear them enough so it was one really nice watch only. (saying that i have a tag carrera but they are a lot more readily available than the rolex or jlc). i havent seen many people wearing a jlc, whereas you do see a lot more sd's and the like. just my opinion of course. i could quite easily have bought a panerai as i was very very tempted with one !

Rolex. Mrs s has a jlc we want to shift not a sniff other than dealers at circa 1.5k (4k new). I have sub (last non ceramic) and have been offered close to original rrp. If you want a jlc get one but the after Market value is dreadful. Buy 2nd hand off time zone if you must.

I'd go for the JLC every time. But then I don't like Rolex's, the knurled ring around the crystal on the datejust (etc) always looks tacky in my opinion.

If you want a watch you may consider selling in the future, and thus your concern is that you want the value to remain reasonably the same (or perhaps even increase), buy a Rolex.

If you want a watch you want you want to love, cherish, and consider special every time you wear it, buy a JLC.

Personally I'm in the JLC camp, as I don't much care for wearing something 1M+ other people buy every year, and I'd rather know what I can put on every morning is something that excites me, and makes me feel good.

I'll be honest ny heart says the JLC because I love the looks and also like the fact that lot's of people don't know what they are.

I've never owned a Rolex and fancied one a couple of years ago but bought my SMP instead. Looking at current prices I'd have made a decent amount if I'd bought back then.

If I could justify it to the wife I'd buy both, although she does think I'm possibly buying Rolex as an investment. How little she knows wink

Whatever I decide up I'll definately buy pre-owned.

P.S there was a lovely looking Vacheron Constantine chrono on TZ-UK a while ago which also took my fancy.

So, in other words -

Head - Rolex

Heart - JLC

If were talking divers style watches, I'd go Rolex but for dress style JLC.

I think a JLC maybe my next purchase. I've seen one I like that would be perfect for the dressed up occassions.

The JLC's are lovely but:-

Crowns / chrono pushers too big for my taste.
Depreciation if buying new.

The true Watch I.S would say JLC for a number of reasons

The heathens amongst us ( including yours truly) would say Rolex.

Every time.

And again on Tuesdays

Big JLC fan but I think the latest ones are getting a little heavy, I preferred their watches about five to ten years ago....here's my 1967 Memovox that I bought a few years ago. I say mine but my wife seems to wear it a lot more than me!
