Can't decide, Monster or G Shock (aviation black/orange)
Discussion
Which is the preffered watch out of the G Shock (the black and orange aviation one) and a Seiko Monster ? Is it just a case of whatever style you prefer with those 2?
I have picked up a black Seiko 5 which i really like. I havn't worn a watch in many years and i've started to get fed up with getting my phone out my pocket to check the time. I can't help feel the Seiko is a little small for me. Im not a big wristed chap but i'd like something a little bigger.
Are there any suggestions for around the £200 (max) mark ? Something suitable for day to day use, rather than a dress piece. Hoping to build myself up to something like a nice Omega eventually but i'll start of with something modest.
Thanks guys.

Thanks guys.I have both a G shock (albeit a 6900) and a black Monster on a bracelet. The G is great as a sports watch, light and accurate but not as versatile as a daily in that its not suited for wearing in the office or pub IMO. That said, at least you can find these on the high street and therefore try before you buy.
The Seiko is a weighty piece of kit and whilst it is as tough as old boots, I doubt the movement would survive a substantial knock much worse than dropping it on a concrete floor. Whereas I would be confident that the G shock would still be going strong after a head on collision with a tank. I also find the Seiko far too heavy for mountain biking and it probably doesn't do the movement much good either.
Both are excellent watches in their own right, both very different, but its down to personal style/taste at the end of the day. I don't think you will be disappointed with either one. If I had to choose between the two, I would go with the Monster every time.
Of course you could get a Monster for circa £120 and then either save another £70 for the G at a later date (assuming you mean the GW-3000B-1AER for circa £150?) or scour the second hand forums so you get both for your budget.

What he said. With a Monster you could get away with wearing it under a shirt sleeve and if anyone glimpsed it, they wouldn't think "pillock" but while the movement is good, it won't handle what a G can handle.

The correct phrase is "powerfully-built".

Well i actually typed powerfully built before, and then back spaced
Maybe i wouldn't be able to put the G shock to its intended purpose aswell as the monster. But the black and orange aviation g shock does look very cool. Not so keen on the rest of the range.Hey, I've worn my MIRO Gulfman to work, wearing a shirt too
There is also a more subtle version, with small red details.

I'm on my phone just now, so cba'd to check, but if we're talking about the gravity defiers, then I can't see how the orange or blue detailed ones wouldn't look bad with a shirt.

Thanks for that, was exactly what i was hoping to hear.
I am swaying towards the monster. From what i can tell they do a red, yellow, black, and orange colour. Decisions decisions.
Just a quick note though.... The red and yellow monsters were VERY limited and if you can find one it will command a very healthy premium over a black or orange (they also did a very limited blue iirc)I am swaying towards the monster. FIGHT!
As Civpilot has already said, anything other than Orange or Black dials are a little more difficult to come by. Seiko do make a "Mini/Neo" Monster though which offer a wider selection of dial colours at around the £100 mark. Not sure how they stack up against an original in terms of build quality as I haven't owned one, they are "only" 100m WR, but might be worth a look...
Happy hunting.
I've both an orange/black GW3000 and a black faced Monster on a bracelet! I personally wear them for different occasions - the G whenever I think it may get bashed/marked/scratched/soaked etc (though I rather I didn't mark it, they are built for knocks) and the Monster for summer days and a T-shirt, the Monster started my collection and the G was the second. I think too much of the BM to wear it when I think it might get bashed, not that it might not stand it but there's so much metal there that I'd rather it remain dink free.
Given the choice of one or the other it'd be the BM - the core virtues of a G can be found in much cheaper models and the Monster, IMO, is one of the best £ for lb watches out there and the bracelet clasp feels more secure than my Sinn at over 10 times the value
ETA case wise the G is wider and taller than the Monster by a good few mil each way and isn't a small watch by any standards, some branches of H Samual stock the G but it may be a bit trickier to try a Monster without buying it first.
