I'm looking to get my first proper watch and have taken a shine to Omegas.
I like the look of the Seamaster diver 300m, black face and bezel, or the Seamaster Planet Ocean again with black face and bezel.

I'd probably be wearing it everyday, and would get a few different straps to see which i prefer (orig. SS, black leather, black rubber & black nato - I like them all in the pics).

Can anyone give some advice ? Should I be looking at a quartz or auto ? what are the benefits / negatives of each ? Will the auto keep better time or hold value better ?

Is it worth looking at pre-owned? Or is this too much of a minefield for a newbie ?

i love the planet ocean range, 2nd hand is fine from a trusted shop/supplier.
blowers are good and usually have plenty of stock.

got to be an automatic for a proper watch for me!

I have the Omega you mention in your post.

Its a beautifully made watch , very attractive , and yes the auto is more mechanical if you can call it that , but i could not stretch to the price , my ones a quartz just like my aerospace , which in all honesty is extremely accurate.

Make sure if you purchase second hand that all the papers match along with the passport style warranty. Its a very tough looking watch.

Mind you the weight warrants a weightlifter style arm.

I love it absolutely love it.

Both the SMP and PO are great watches.

POs are only automatics, whereas the SMP can be had in auto and quartz variants.

Suggest you buy on the bracelet (and then buy leather/rubber straps) and get an auto if you choose the SMP.

I have been wearing my SMP for the last 2 weeks and swapped back from the rubber to the bracelet last night.

As already mentioned, be sure to opt for the SMP or PO on the stainless steel bracelet. The reason for this is the minimal difference in RRP price between the bracelet, rubber and leather strap variants. However if you opt for a model with a strap and then decide you'd like the bracelet, you'll need to shell out around £550!

In regards to quartz vs. automatic, have a read through this: http://blog.samuelgordons.com/?p=1344

I'd personally opt for an automatic - They provide a greater sense of occasion, IMHO.

I have been wearing it as a beater while off work but fancied wearing it for some business trips. The rubber strap / clasp does not fit under a double cuff very well

Just in case someone wants the watch with the rubber and not the SS, keep me in mind as I would be interested in it...assuming it'll fit a 45.5 wink

Keep an eye out on TZ sales corner I got a beautiful PO there about 3 weeks ago, absolute minter on a bracelet with 3 other straps, and it still has 15 months warranty, as PO are warranted for 3 years
