I am thinking of buying either a brietling or rolex. I have just returned from Gibraltar, after speaking to numerous watch salesmen I was assured they could beat any price.Am i better buying brand-new or is it worth looking at used watches?I am quite taken with some of the gold models.Any pointers to help a mere novice would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Agree 100% I would never buy another new watch again. Luckily for us were in the minority liking gold watches so there's quite a discount when buying secondhand over the stainless equivalents.

My current fave is my 16613 Sub which I don't think I'll ever part with!

I must say a bi metal is my favourite though I do like full gold with leather straps.

I was in Gibraltar last summer, there were plenty of dealers out there, most of whom were down Main Street along with designer sunglass outlets and so on. My friend's wife got herself a £300 pair of Chanel sunglasses for £200 with quite a bit of haggling only to find that she could have got the same pair back here in the UK for about the same. You may be able to bag a bargain out there but I'd do a bit of research first before you commit, just because it's tax free doesn't necessarily mean that you can't get it cheaper elsewhere.

Personally I'd say you're better off going pre-owned anyway smile

Get a white gold sub. Mmm. I'll have it as my "beater" one day (after the lottery win).

I thought you didn't like the Mercedes hands on Rolex watches?

You're right. I still think it's a design error. I bought a couple of Alphas to try to get used to it. Still don't like it. However, if you've felt the heft of the white gold sub, you'd forgive it. nuts

Plus, if I could afford an £18k watch, I could afford a £50 hand swap. wink

Wait a sec, mister. What are you doing here? I thought you'd gone off watches?

No, no. Biding my time 'til I can indulge properly.

Maybe in a Rolex with the wrong hands, probably not a WG one though hehe

I am gland I went new when I got my Sub, but I would have no worries buying S/H from the right dealer.

I would say though when I was looking there was less than £1,000 to save S/H to new and it was well worth the extra to get the watch new.
