bit more info been digging about it this morning, i 99.9% its not a rolex, and that the rolex band has been added after.. the winder crown doesnt have a rolex crown on it.. the serial (if its rolex) would make it 1947 which was before the sultan was the sultan, so pretty sure its not a rolex..

The winder has a mark on it, which is below.. any guesses?

My first thought was that it isn't a Rolex but I'm really not sure.

The watch is not a Rolex, as you've worked out. The logo on the crown is the 'Baume at Mercier' logo. You'll need to take the case back off to check for any identifying marks on the movt or case back. Asprey have used various makers to make an 'in-house' watch.

Hope this helps.

Middle Eastern types avoid using the left hand traditionally.

Does this apply to wearing watches as well ?

The script is the signature of the Sultan of Oman, it was applied to show that he himself had ordered this watch.

It was given to my grandfather along with many other crested and signed watches during his time in the Royal Oman Police, and The Army.

It is indeed an ASPREY - an 18K gold automatic watch by Baume & Mercier and retailed by Asprey of Bond Street, London.

A nice champagne dial with Roman numerals in bold black, and date aperture at three o'clock, round 32mm case with matching bezel, and fitted to an after market bracelet.

I don’t know anything about the Saudi script, or why it was applied.
thanks for the details, do you know what strap it would have had on originally?

And do i go to asprey or B&M for more details?

Cheers
