Gold Rolex Submariner or GMT
Discussion
Hello chaps, i'm not a regular on the watches forum...
Im lookining at the above two options (both the full gold, not bi-metal coloured).
The main question is what would make the best 'investment'? I would probably keep it for good but always like to hedge just in case...
Secondly, what would be a good target price fpr a used (but mint) model?
Cheers for ny advice.

It depends which you prefer, both are quality and highly desireable pieces.
The Sub will be a tad more 'flippable' yet the GMT slightly more exclusive. I opted for a blue Sub just over 12 months ago, paid 7 3/4k for a mint 2005 from a used rolex dealer (who I know) complete with all the boxes cards and gummin's (make sure you check everything...twice)
I find the Sub to be more of an allrounder, classic simple elegance and very tough, the GMT is also very very good yet I find the numbers on the bezzle a bit 'loud' and just not for me,
As for investment...well it's all about buying right, try and stay away from the more 'pimped' variants, Serti dials and diamond encrusted mother of pearl b@stardisations from tastefuly challenged ex colonials.

Thanks for that.
I must say I'm more taken by the looks of the sub. I've got a Datejust (steel with blue dial) which I love and have worn pretty much daily for the last 15 years. Just fancy treating myself.
Know what you mean about the pimped up Rolex look though, really not my kind of thing. I am seriously looking forward to having a fully gold watch tjough and can't really explain why - I don't have anything like that in my life!
Cheers,
Ben

If you are looking for an 'investment' forget the all gold (or in fact bi-metal) models.
Unless it is a limited edition piece you will NEVER recover your money. Even then its doubtful (with Rolex anyway as they dont make limited editions in small numbers)
I have an early 90s daydate 18ct on president. Absolutely mint and worn not more than 50 times. Even the hinge on the clasp is still stiff.
Now at the time I think it retailed for around £10k. Out of interest a couple of years ago I took it into a few of the Burlington Arcade dealers - price ranged from £3k-£4k. Go figure.
Not worth selling for what it is so it stays in the safe.
Believe me the stainless sports are the one's - doubled my money on my Sub over the same period. Although that will NEVER be for sale so really I should have bought two.

Would one say this is 'pimped'? I don't think I would.
To paraphrase the words of Bricktop, "it aint exactly inconf
kingspicuous".As for real pimped, I was thinking along the lines of a real sand dweller special:

Yep I've got one too.
I suspect prices have sneaked up a bit over the last year or so. Currently I suspect 8-9.5k would be about right for a good'un..... if you can find one.

I have to agree the white gold does look pretty, but I do prefer the 'common and garden' 18k Yellow
here's mine

Although the prices have risen steadily over the last 12 months or so my purchase was one of ambition over practicality/investment. It was something that I'd always dreamed of owning/wearing and when the chance arrived I went for it.
I would never buy new, as it just isn't worth the depreciation (just like buying a new Jag) but a quality used one will last a lifetime and should the situation arise you will always return your outlay and maybe a bit extra too.
Last time I checked they were £ 20,600.00 RRP
Good luck in finding what you want.
