My parents gave me a lovely Tag Heuer 2000 Professional with an Automatic movement for my 18th birthday.

I've worn it nearly everyday since, and had it serviced professionally three times in the last 15 years frown (I know it should be serviced more often, but it's over a £100 a time).

However, it's now got to the point where it stops whenever I take the watch off.

Is it possible to get a new movement for it, or should a full service sort it out?

having it serviced once every 5years should be fine, if it's nwin charging now it could be any number of things, probably a fault with the main spring given it runs while you wear it, but an AD should be able to quote you before expensive surgery is required. Would be a shame not to use a piece with nice history like that.

My Tag auto generally stops after c24 hours of 'inactivity'.

Didn't wear it over the weekend, so had to start it up this morning. By 6pm it had gained 35 minutes. Set it back right, by 10pm it had gained another 17 minutes. frown

Major surgery required?

Might just need regulating, part of a standard service. Gaining time is unusual, especially in such an odd way. At least the spring is still being wound (hence it does store some power), just it's being released in a hap-hazard fashion. Not sure what a Tag service is, it was £160 for a quartz the other day going to Tag themselves (battery & service- well, as much as you can service in a quartz...) Depending on the value of the watch/ what it means to you it might be worth asking if a dealer has an in-house service which is cheaper.
