Oceanographic 4000

I may be out of sync with the rest of you here, since although I like watches for me they are a function of purpose over style, but I wonder why on earth we need a new divers watch that is waterproof to 4,000 metres? I mean, that's further down than the resting place of the Titanic! 48mm (a soup plate to me) and a mere £13,000. Am I losing the plot, or are there others who feel that the art of watchmaking is going in some cases down the completely wrong path?
