Hey guys,

Was walking around Bond Street a couple of weeks ago and noticed that the Sub 50th Anni is now worth in the region of 5.5k... Will they really fetch this?

Cheers

Bond Street and 'worth' are 2 very different things - all of the watches around there have giant markups. I'd be amazed if the old (non-ceramic) green sub went for anythink like that to anybody remotely aware of values - but there is always someone who will buy what they like at whatever price... thats who buys these from Bond St.

Sounds about one bag overpriced - if you have a look online most 16610LV are going for about 4.5K, compared with 4k for the black bezel version (16610)

The stainless subs tend to appreciate, partly because Rolex keep pushing up the prices, also CHF is very strong at the moment

Wrong watch I'm afraid, that's the 116610LV not the 50th anniversary 16610LV. 50th has a green bezel with black face, however much prefer yours (have one myself).

Hi Gents,

Defo a 50th Year Anni watch, I should know as I have one myself, Maxi dial, black face with green bezel.

Hmm to think I was going to get rid of it as I feel it's brought me nothing but bad luck!

Cheers

Not that I want to point and laugh but if you own a 116610LV and can't tell the difference in bezel, case styling, hands, dial etc between this and yours I think you need to get your eyesight checked mate.

My mistake, the angle of the original picture which I commented on made the face look green to my eyes. Maybe you're right and I do need an eye test as I've just compared mine to the rest of the pics and can't see any difference in the hands, casing or bezel, just the colour of the face. Maybe you'd be so kind to point out these obvious differences?

TIA

Is there any significance as to why the bezel is green?

I don't know about tourist prices - £5.5 seems a bit on the high side, but if it is a minty one with a full set, they will get that eventually. As for the other one you linked, you have no idea from the pics posted as to what condition the watch is in. The seller has a few ads up, and I'm really not sure whether their prices are reflecting realistic market values either.

I'm not sure if this is a wind up, but I'll point out the major differences.

The 'new' 116610 LV has the new case with the fatter lugs, a ceramic bezel, the new bracelet with solid links and a glide lock clasp, blue lume and the new parachrom hairspring (though you can't see that). HTH. smile Oh, and a yucky green dial.

Yeh I agree the new one is hideous, the old black dial is beautiful

There are quite a few differences between the 16610 LV (50th anni edition) and the 116610 LV ("The Hulk")

The biggest difference is the new case style used by Rolex for the new ceramic submariners. It's very similar in size to the case from the GMT II Ceramic that has been out for a while now. The most notable points would be the end of the lugs (lugs being the two outer portions of the case where it meets the bracelet). You can see that they are a good bit thicker than the original version. The second difference is with the crownguards. Where before they are almost triangular here on the Hulk you can see that they sweep up and then have a very fat top.

The bezel itself is an entirely different construction being a ceramic material vs the aluminium insert on the LV. This has very deep lettering carved from the ceramic itself and then filled (using a technique similar to DLC or PVD) with platinum. At some angles it will appear grey, and change to a light silver depending on the lighting conditions. It is also very obvious that the numbering is recessed in comparison to the LV. As a comparison you could get a new insert from Rolex for the LV for around $120, a new ceramic bezel will cost you $1000 at least, possibly a little less if it's a service piece.

The new crystal on the Hulk also has another major distinguishing feature. The double layered anti reflective coating on the cyclops. It creates a very readable date even at high angles but is immediately noticeable on this, other ceramic subs, and the GMT II ceramic.

There are a lot of other little differences that are not as noticeable at first glance and without at least a closer inspection of the watch itself. There's the braclet with the glidelock clasp (as noted above) the blue chromalight luminescence of the dial and hands, the bezel pearl construction is very different as well.

Even though technically the cases are the same size, the Hulk with it's slightly beefed up dimensions looks bigger on the wrist compared to an older sub.

Also, i do apologise. I came across a bit harshly. I do forget that not everyone spends as much time as others obsessing over minute differences in watches from model to model.

Doesn't look right. Submariners should have the black bezel - end of!

You are correct in terms of Bond Street/Burlington Arcade prices - complete joke. Only a mug (or Jap tourist) would pay the ticket price.
