I've been bought a cheap-ish automatic watch as a present (outside UK, so taking it back is not an option).

When it was bought, it wasn't running. The shop owner wound it up to the stop which obviously set it going.

It has it's own seperate second clock which keeps perfect time. The issue we're having is with the main time keeping. It seems to fall out of time with the seconds counting.

When we set the time correctly it stays correct for about 5 mins or so then starts falling out. The main thing to note is I havn't worn it for more than 10 minutes yet and from what I have read it works off constant movement (pendulum element inside)?

Should I let it stop working and then correctly set it up or do I just need to start wearing it all day and it should start working correctly?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had this on a cheap automatic - turned out the minute hand was loose. You may need to get it to a watch repairer unless you know what you're doing (high risk of bending a hand or scratching the dial).

What does fall out of time mean?
It runs slow? there's 2 watches in there one which is fine but the second on isn't?

Yeah, The second hand (on the seperate timer/dial) works fine, the hour/minute hand runs slow over time.

Ideally it should go to a watch repair place who can "regulate" it.
There will be a speed adjustor inside, and they can set it very accurate, or you could try by trail and error

Just noticed it's loosing about 4 seconds every minute. Roughly.

Can they be re-calibrated or can this be sorted by it being regulated?

It does seem lot a lot, I'm not sure what the adjustment range on them is.

That's the bit you'll be looking for.

Forgive me for asking, but what happens if you touch the spring stud? Are you eternally damned to always wear quartz watches?

no idea, but it may be holding the end of the hairspring in that bit.
I'm pretty sure you can also move the bit that stud is in, which changes the beat.
That isn't particularly good, it'll give you longer ticks than tocks...

It sounds like the cannon pinion is loose. Any decent watch repairer should be able to fix it for you.
