..when you can just look up at night to see the actual moon phase?

It seems completely pointless compared, say, to a chrono function, day, date etc.

I assume it s just because they can.

Ok, say it is cloudy.

What is the practical application of knowing the phase of the moon?

Now a werewolf activity complication would be pretty useful...

The point of most complications and indeed the point of almost all (high-end) mechanical watches is "because they can".

The problem for me is when the "oooh look at me, I'm so clever with all my awesome complicationnessesses" overtakes the "what a nice watch" aspect.

Didn't Corum do that on one of their 'Bubble' series?

You're thinking of the Dracula / Vampire watch.

Yes indeed, it was what I was referring to. Perhaps the werewolf complication was an optional extra? smile

No idea dude.

I think it's Cooky on here that has the Corum vampire watch. Came in a cool coffin shaped box too biggrin

Edit: It's Quinny, not Cooky...

I think it is mostly a celebration of mechanical ingenuity.
Similarly, one can argue what is the point of mechanical chronos in the age of smartphones? Not many use their mechanical chrono functions and even fewer knows how to read them.
