Unfortunatly, my grandmother recently passed away. She left me a little money, and I would like to use it to buy something tangible.

Always had a hankering for a TAG ( Carrera Calibre 16 specifically), however this might be stretching the budget a little, and to be honest, most sales guys I work with have something similar. It may not be indiviual enough.

Any outside suggestions? Christopher ward are nice, but just not quite right somehow.

If it helps, I am currently wearing one of these.

Id like something a little less fussy, but this shows my tastes (or perhaps lack of..?)

Thanks

Walsh

I just got a Fortis B-42 day/date for my 30th, having looked at Sinn, Ball and Oris with a budget of £1500. The B-42 was £1100 and I absolutely love it. It's plain, simple, a lovely size and nice weight, I'm chuffed with it.

With a grad I'd be buying a classic Omega or similar. Much classier and would never drop in value.

Ball? Got my engineer master dlc for just under 1000 with a bit of haggling, love it and you don't see many of them about.

What do you want it for- to replace the Edifice as something for daily wear, or something for a special occasion?

For dress you can get something more delicate perhaps, so it could be that bit more special to you-

Longines: http://www.watches.co.uk/watch/12983s/longines-mas...

Hamilton: http://www.watches.co.uk/watch/1186p/hamilton-jazz... (might even be able to get new from Ernest Jones- they often have at least some Hamiltons half price).

Vintage Tudor: http://www.chrono24.com/en/tudor/rose-oysterdate-v...

Vintage Omega: http://www.chrono24.com/en/omega/de-ville-9ct-gold...

Elegant Tag reissue: http://www.chrono24.com/en/tagheuer/carrera-automa...

Bell & Ross (a good price for this 123) http://www.chrono24.com/en/bellross/vintage-123-st...

Charmex (rare, and beautiful): http://www.chrono24.com/en/charmex/charmex-of-swit...

Something more everyday:

Oris TT1: http://www.chrono24.com/en/oris/tt1-automatic-dive...

B&M Capeland S: http://www.chrono24.com/en/baumemercier/capeland-s...

Porsche Design: http://www.chrono24.com/en/porschedesign/dashboard...

Glycine Combat: http://www.chrono24.com/en/glycine/combat-07-chron...

Tag Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis: http://www.chrono24.com/en/tagheuer/limited-editio...

Basically, a grand buys a LOT of watch. Tell us what type of watch, and you never know what you might find...

The Omega is on the shortlist.

Blue face or black though. Id probably keep the edifice as the daily, as its nice not to worry about it too much.

Classic Tag looks good though.. Likely to hold its value?

The Omega SMP is the default choice IMO. - like a 3-Series BMW, you can't really go wrong with it. A great watch you could easily live with for the rest of your life.

I like Heuers and since you've mentioned 'TAGs' how about a Heuer Re-Edition Carrera Automatic?

Probably about right, to be honest ... It's well worn, that's for sure!

A new one is about a grand. Took my 1999 F1 for a service recently and had a peep in the display.

Blue, without a doubt. I've had both, going from blue to black and then changing my mind again.

It looks a bit different, there's so many black divers style watches out there that it looks the same as the rest.

The blue has a really classy look to it, and stands out a bit more.

Definitely my favourite.

In fairness, the Formula 1 range has evolved quite dramatically and new models includes either exotic materials or new complications. It was only a short while ago that a no-thrills non-chrono Formula 1 on a bracelet was around RRP £670. I remember, as I bought my Gulf Edition a month ago and it was several tenners more expensive (RRP £795) due to the 'Gulf' design.

As such, I'd say a severely beaten up, no-thrills F1, such as the one on eBay, is 'okay' for £160, but not a bargain.
