I will have a voucher to spend in Goldsmiths or similar shop in the next couple of weeks for just over 2k quid.

Can I expect a discount in any of the main hight street retailers or they all an oligopoly?

PS For around or just over 2k what would you most currently covet?

A friend of mine went into Goldsmiths with Tesco Clubcard Vouchers. IIRC £10 becomes £40 to spend there.

No discount was possible if paying by those vouchers. Although that may be his bad negotiating!

I got 18% off a ladies Omega at Goldsmiths in meadowhall just before Xmas.

Also Goldsmiths only stock Omega in selected stores, none in Leeds hence having to go to Sheffield.

I got 15% off a ladies Omega last year from Goldsmiths and a similar amount off a Tag the year before.

All done from nothing more than asking and saying you will buy now if you can do it for 'x' amount.

This is the watch that currently has my attention http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Omega-Seamaster-300M-G...

With a 20 % discount it would cost me 136 quid !! A right bargain (man maths)

Although I also now like this http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Breitling-Aerospace-Av...

You'll struggle to get discount with vouchers. Speak to Dominic H, he'll get you a good discount.

Nice watch... But ring a store first as most don't carry stock.

I was led to believe the same as posted above, no discount if vouchers used. I guess they don't get the full value of the vouchers, always worth a cheeky ask though and don't forget more than one shop in a city will probably carry the watch your looking for.

Just showing off but I got a 33% discount on a bell and Ross green ceramic making it significantly cheaper than the secondhand version I nearly bought, woo me indeed wink

Vouchers are like cash, there should be no problem getting a discount too. I managed with an Omega years ago and paid with vouchers after my house was burgled.

Yes my vouchers are from an insurance payout so I assume they are just like cash but restricted in that they can only be used in certain shops.

Negotiate the discount without any mention of the vouchers. When it comes to paying produce the vouchers and if they demure then threaten to walk away. Worked for me.

Thrice?
Well, I suppose that in the credit crunch they must need the business.....

I don't think you'll get any discount with insurance vouchers.
The insurance company has already settled with Goldsmiths, and you effectively have store credit to use against goods.
In both cases your ability to negotiate a discount are gone, as you are already a customer seeking to exchange vouchers/store credit for goods. To be frank, you can't go elsewhere you are Goldsmiths customer. You can't go elsewhere.

Could be wrong of course...

Do this. If it doesn't work, walk out and go elsewhere

The op said 'Goldsmiths or similar' so there is leverage ...

Wrong......I think you will find your insurance company get a big discount off the voucher by giving say Goldsmiths their business......you can't get further discount .......they are not like cash

They are pre discounted vouchers

Personally I wouldn't accept a voucher as a settlement for a claim ....it's a con

I understand your point but it is hardly a con?

The payment is for a Breitling Colt that was water damaged. The voucher will be for the replacement of that watch. The rrp to replace is covered by that voucher so hardly a con?

As to the point of not accepting it do I have that option? I appreciate that cash would give me a better bargaining tool for a discount but can I insist on that when I am not technically being raped by accepting a voucher that gives me the current version of the damaged watch?

If your willing to post up can you tell me which voucher you have?(LMG,Gem,Hallmark) and how much it's for? Will see what I can do in terms of helping you find the correct watch and if there's anything that can be done price wise.

I have no problem doing that and will confirm once my voucher is sent out

I've very recently had the same experience. I received an LMG gem card. There was zero movement on rrp from any of the authorised outlets. LMG take 25 per cent of any final sale price in return for sending the business to the outlet. That 25 per cent swallows up any chance of you haggling for a discount. I got what I was after and was, in general, very happy with the process. My AD said that there may be room for movement on anything that I was paying cash for, but dug in when I pushed for a discount using the gem card. If they have what you want and it's within your budget, there's little point fretting about what you could have had.
