A forum I've hardly ventured into so please give me some slack where needed! Further to my last thread regarding inheriting my Grandfather's Grandfather clock, I've also been passed his old Military issue pocket watch. It's a Jaeger LeCoultre timepiece with GS/TP P50370 stamped on the rear. It runs but doesn't stay running (ie it will run for about 2-3 mins then stop when fully wound). I'd like to see about getting it restored for sentimental reasons but don't know the first thing about costs or best places to go. I'm Bucks based but occasionally go into London (Paddington or Holborn area).

This is the watch in question, click for full size photo.

The JLC boutique on Bond Street has a first class watchmaker, Richard, on the premises - a simple movement like this would probably quite a fun project for him.

Please let them at least have a look at it, they are all so into the history of the brand there!

The "service" offered by JLC is shocking.

I took one of Mrs Whoami's watches back to my local AD for service in April.

I'm still waiting to get it back. rolleyes

I have a number of JLC watches, suffice to say I won't any buying any more.

For balance, my AMVOX was serviced and rebuilt free of charge after being dropped, even though I bought it second hand. And my Reverso has just come back looking brand new, although it was away for 5 months smile

4 months is pretty normal for high end Swiss. Unlike many brands, when they say its going back to the manufacture, it actually does. And you join a queue. Your watch is often serviced by whoever built it too.

However, I was suggesting the OP took it to the boutique, not had it sent away. Always up for a whinge though, eh? rolleyes

I can see where Whoami is coming from. I've recently had a Master Compressor back from a service. It took 20 weeks. I think that's borderline unacceptable, especially given that JLC tell me I should have my pieces serviced every three years. What that says is that having spent a significant wedge, I can wear my watch for two and a half years out of every three.

If I were running JLC, I'd be thinking about hiring some more watchmakers. The demand is obviously there.

Just stating a fact.

Glad to hear that your experience has been better than mine.

Probably increased by the fact that JLC don't sell spare parts to anyone either, so you don't have a lot of options for repairs.

Stumbled across this thread searching for something else so allow me to say "Holy thread resurrection, Batman!" hehe

I took my Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Chronograph to their boutique in Old Bond Street on 1st November, I looked at the display of veteran cars on Pall Mall at he same time. Collected it 4 weeks later on 3rd December. The watch occasionally stopped while changing date overnight so they recommended a full service. It's now perfect and interestingly the date snaps over immediately at midnight, whereas previously, if it managed to change, it would slowly creep over between midnight ad two in the morning. Not cheap but, as you can imagine, I'm very pleased.

Just under 12 1/2 years on.... and I've still not had it serviced! Blimey was it really that long ago?? I did get in touch with Clockworks (on here) but never got around to sending it off to him. Hmm, maybe in 2026 I'll finally get it serviced and working again.

In other news, I did get my Grandfather clock serviced earlier this year, so at least I've done one of my two timepieces! I did also use the Mappin and Webb shop in London to get that watch serviced (2014??) as well - so 2 out of 3 isn't bad... getmecoat
