Hi all!

I've been looking for months with an open mind for something simple, timeless, from a brand with some heritage, around £500 (birthday budget guesswork) for my 21st birthday, with a view to keep for the rest of my life. I think I have decided on a blue Longines Hydroconquest, ideally the automatic model, yet these are £790... The quartz model is just over £500.

I ran it by my Dad, who took no convincing, and said he was fine with £500! (He's a Longines man himself) He expects my younger sister might contribute a little too smile

Now, for me, the automatic version is much more special as a timepiece, but obviously my budget is short. I'd much rather a pre-owned mint automatic for similar money if I can find one. My father would like to use a reputable dealer/jeweller.

Where should I be looking? I'm struggling so far looking at online inventories. Dom H? Parkers Jewellery have had a few in the past... anywhere else?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

I haven't bought from here, but if you can get to £610 then this would fit the bill:

Have you tried going to a shop with a new one in stock and being cheeky? They have the new designs on the way so you might get a great deal. I paid £600 in June for a new 39mm black auto through a friend (so can't say which dealer).

I've never used them, but I personally know people who have who said only good things about them.

I have read decent things about them - do a search on here and TZ for people's experiences

I bought mine from them in May - Very good service.

They have a proper shop if your dad's dead set on buying over the counter, although I presume they're not an AD to get such good prices.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

£610 new is very good! My Dad's given me a strict £500 budget, and with £550 i'm assuming my little sister might contribute a little, so i'm pushing it! I could contribute myself, but I suppose i'm worried it'll take the shine off it?

Perhaps nearer the time it would be worth going to the shop in Blackburn with £550 cash...

My Dad is happy to buy online for sure, just would like to purchase from a dealer smile

Unfortunately i'm a long way from being able to post in the for sale section on TZ UK and Watchuseek.

Also - Dom H replied swiftly, unfortunately Longines don't come up for him often.

If you want to walk into the shop with the cash, make sure that they have it in stock first wink

On an unrelated note, browsing their site it is disturbing how expensive TAG Heuer have become. Their reduced prices on there are more than you would have paid until maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

And I simply cannot fathom walking into that shop and walking out with a quartz Aquaracer for £930 when I could have an automatic Hydroconquest for £610....

I'm not sure you'll get a deal like that by turning up with cash, they're model is to sell lots at the lowest price.

You might get lucky but ADs have a big margin to play with, clearly Iconic don't.

Well, i've sent enquiries to WatchFinder, BanksLyon, Parkers Jewellers, John Gowing (down the road!), and Dom H, who can't help unfortunately.

£610 - Iconic Watches can't go lower - too tighter margin as expected - but have offered me free shipping, so £610 all in!

£615 shipped - http://www.premiumwatches.com/longines-hydroconque...

£585 shipped - http://www.qiphe.com/longines-hydroconquest-l3-642... (Contact for availability - out of stock perhaps?)

With shipping Qiphe is only £25 less, and they're pretty vague about warranties, so I think i'll be going with Iconic Watches for £610 in the coming weeks, unless anyone i've contacted comes back with a mint pre-owned example closer to the budget.

Good for you; great choice! I've had two Longines, an Evidenza chronograph and a Spirit Chronograph, both fantastcially good quality watches yes

The Hydroconquest is definitely a forum favourite.

Hasty post, never checked the size - just shows you can't rely on sellers putting them in the correct category.
I'd narrowed it down to men's, ffs!

I assumed so. I've done it before!
I just realised that the proportions looked slightly wrong (the body/lugs seem narrower to the bracelet if that makes sense).
I wouldn't have realised had I not worn one for nearly a month.

Haggle hard. I got a 41mm Black Auto Hydroconquest last year from a dealer for £680. Brand new, warrantied from a local dealer has to be worth a small premium.

Apprehensive in dealing with some unknown italian, via Chrono24... please reassure me if you have used Chrono24 before, buying from sellers in the rest of the EU.

£100 cheaper than Iconic Watches, and apparently new in the box, with the paperwork and 24 month Longines warranty.

EDIT: Found their website, where they charge 110 euros for shipping - assuming the same from chrono24 - £603... At £610, i'd go with Iconic Watches... maybe this is telling me something!
