Outdoors Watch - maybe Sunnto Core?
Discussion
Hello all,
I’m after a holiday watch which will also double as a shooting, running, cycling watch - something ‘outdoorsy’ and was wondering if anyone owns a Suunto Core and have a sensible review they can share?
I really like the look of the Core. Unfortunately, there are more than one or two terrible reviews, although for balance there more great reviews, and it’s always the case that very few people post a review when all is well and there’s nothing to moan about. But still…
I’ve got my 10 year old Breitling for pretty much everything, but am reluctant to take this to a beach for a week. (long but familiar story, stripped threads, popped crown and goes nowhere near water until repaired!)
I did think briefly about a G Shock, although try as I might, I really don’t like the furiously busy, melted Lego 80’s look – are there any other brands that I’m missing? (price point around £200 say)
Also, the Core looks huge, I think the Breiters is around 37/38mm versus the Core’s 49mm!
Thanks all 

I have a suunto core. Bought for the look and idea as an outdoors watch... By faaarrrrr the biggest issue with the watch is the reverse display light on black which makes it completely unreadable outside!!!!! It's also rather large for what it is. I'd buy something else, in fact I'm gonna ebay mine when I get time. Not sure what to swop with however.

I have one for my holiday watch. It does tend to eat batteries and the altitude meter isn't the most accurate but it does the job.

I got quite keen on these ABC type watches last year and anded up buying several. First it was a Suunto Core then an Ambit 2 followed by a Garmin Fenix and then the Pro Trek 2500T which is the one one with the Ti bracelet the last poster mentioned. The Ambit and the Fenix do cost a little more but Id consider them in the same area depending how fixed your budget is.
They all have their plus and minus points.
The Core is light and very comfotable. It wears like a smaller watch on even my tiny wrists. I would echo MikeH in that the All Black version which I have is almost unreadable unless the light is good and if I was doing it again Id go for the standard display every time even though it doesnt look quite as cool.
The Ambit is much like a Core but with GPS and is a bit more chunky and not quite a comfy on the smaller wrist due to the stiffer strap. Having said that I wear it most of the lot.
The Garmin Fenix is on paper very similar to the Ambit and does have some cool features. I have downloaded free maps onto mine (quite easy to do) so you can use it as a sort of basic satnav. Very comfy to wear and light if a little Fisher Price to look at.
The Pro Trek is the last I bought and in some ways I like it a lot. It is the most attractive in my opinion and the solar power/radio control aspects are appealing but it does feel like a pumnped up Casio which of course is what it is. The others feel like instruments that you wear.
If you want a cool looking Man Watch on your wrist the Casio wins but if that isnt your priority Id discount it. That comes down to Suunto vs Garmin which in my mind is a bit like Apple vs Android, the Suunto's do just work, the altimiters stay accurate for ages despite pressure and location changes and on the Ambit the GPS locks on quickly and the battery life is better than the Fenix. The Fenix does offer more for the fettler though. I should add here that Im an Android man rather than Apple but it is just a watch and it depends what you want from it.
Summing up after all that waffle Suunto are imo the ddaddy at these type of watches and thats where my money would go but dont hesitate to come back if you want any more specific info on the ones I have.

t watch! Too fragile for much more than dress wear. Buttons fell off and it just felt flimsy. I changed to G-shock as soon as the second one began to fail.
