I'm about to leave a job I've been at for a while and as a present to myself I'm going to get a watch. I know there are a lot of opinions on which brand are considered the engineering kings and which ones are best overall but quite simply I like the look of the Carreras and they feel right on my wrist. Not particularly drowning in research but there you go.

Here's the one I'm looking at:

I'm here to ask for some ownership tips and your experiences of owning items that cost more than one of my Subarus. One bonus is that I'm getting this for a good discount through a friend who works closely with TAG themselves so at the very least it'll always appreciate, but I can't see me parting with it.

Thx

David

Get it on bracelet and buy the strap afterwards. Much more expensive the other way around.

If you like it go for it .Its anice watch.

Nice looking watch but 'always appreciate'? A TAG won't appreciate.

Unless you're getting a 50% discount, in which case it might. For a few years,.

As above I'm afraid tags drop money like a stone. Nice enough watch though for what it is. Buy a classic heuer if you want a chance of appreciation.

There are some rather nice TAGs available today.

I've got a soft spot for Tag Carrera's, but I echo what everyone else has said, it wont even hold its money let alone appreciate. Discount wise, aim for between 10-15% at a jeweler, TAG themselves restrict what they can be sold for apparently. The only watch brand I know that will appreciate is a Rolex.

These go for about a grand to 1200 second hand second hand, and at a grand they are a very nice watch indeed; decent 7750 movement (although not chronometer grade, heaven forbid TAG spent money on quality), nice case, great history.

I had one, literally never wore it, flogged it back to the original owner.

Nice and weighty though and a good looking piece. At close to 50% discount that's a nice buy (unless the RRP is staggering) but please don't be so blinkered as to think it will appreciate in value inside 10-15 years. It won't.

the reason your getting a good discount is because people are becoming aware of Tag's shortcomings and they are not shifting them.....they are an ok watch which are vastly overpriced

I'm obviously looking in the wrong areas, but where could one find a Tag, like this, for a grand to 1200?
As an everyday work watch, this would be great.

Thanks

I can't believe these are retailing for over £3K now, I bought mine about 6 years ago for £1300 with a discount. It seems like nobody bothered to tell Tag there has been a recession and low inflation the last few years!!

Putting the price aside it's a nice watch and I've had no issues with it, It probably only gets worn about twice a year though.

If they are 3k there are better/nicer watches to be had IMO.

Tags depreciate like a stone compared to other swiss brands like omega.

The leather strap I found is not very strong, mine broke after a few months. Don't buy a Tag branded replacement, stupidly expensive for a bit of dead cow.

Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it. I'm getting it on a near 50% discount and not from a jewlers thankfully. When I say appreciate I should have really said not lose me money on what I'll pay but I could handle a few hundred pounds drop over several years smile

I'll take a look at the link above too.

Why would anyone think about depreciation when buying a watch, unless they were constantly changing them? OP, if you like it, buy it!
