Having just signed back upto PH again after several years in the wilderness, wondering if some of the resident watch experts on here could help me.

Currently have a rather beautiful Seamaster chrono (black face) that my wife very kindly bought me as a wedding present back in January, but already my eye is straying (watch I hasten to add - not the wife, she's definitely a keeper). Fancy also adding a Speedie but am a little confused as to the various sizes.

Although I have wrists akin to a small child, I do like a watch of 40mm or so (the Seamaster is 41.5mm I think), and I've come across various sizes for the Speedmaster, from the "reduced" at 35.5mm all the way to 41mm. Is it just my misreading of the various adverts on Ebay and Watchfinder, or are there more than the 2 sizes ?

Many thanks in advance.

Ps, had better add, it will be a used watch, looking to spend £1250 or so. Think I'd be quickly divorced if SWMBA thought I was going to blow £3000 or so on something else to massage my vanity !! Lol.

The 'standard' original Speedmaster Moon watch model no. 3570.50 is 42mm. Sapphire crystal version is also 42mm. There are some special editions with varying sizes - I've seen and tried on a 40mm.

I found the 42mm was best for my 6.75" wrist. 40mm was just a little on the small side and looked too delicate to my eye.

PS: just seen the reduced version on the Omega website at 35.5mm. Why not have a look around the Omega website- It lists all model sizes.

You know, 95% of all men think their wrists are thinner than average. (Not that I make a habit of measuring men's wrists of course! but we all seam to think we have skinny wrists.) Your Seamaster chonograph must be a little bigger and heavier than the full size Speedmaster, so if your comfortable with it then I'd go for the original moon-watch size.

What he said ^^

The original hesalite crystal 'Moonwatch' is the Speedy to have. It;s very slim and the 42mm is a great size.

Unless you can afford the very latest 9300 twin-register version which is VERY nice yes

I too have been hankering after a Speedmaster.

I've become confused by movements, rather than sizes. Are they all manual or is that just the Moonwatch?

Just the original moon watch, which runs a Lemania 321 or 861 (from 1968) manual wind movement. Lemania was bought by the swatch group (along with Omega, ETA and a lot of other companies). Later Speedmasters have ETA 7750 or a selection of other Omega movements. I'm not 100% certain but I think only the cal 321 & 861 are spaceflight qualified by NASA, and only the plexiglass and not the sapphire as sapphire shatters into a million fragments if broken - not good in a zero g environment.

I must be confused. I assumed the Auto version was 38mm, the actual moon watch was 40mm and then they released a 42mm with sapphire crystal?

Or have I got it completely wrong?

Yup. Speedmaster Professional 'Moonwatch' always has and always will be 42mm smile

Just goes to show the dimensions can be deceiving. It looked the same size as my Explorer.

Ignore me then.

Go for the hesalite crystal Moonwatch. Iconic and will never date or be out of style.

Many thanks for the numerous responses, gives me something to think about, but expect that finances will (sadly) dictate a 38mm case. Would love the new 42mm version, but very close to used Submariner prices.

This watch collecting thing is going to get expensive !!

Watches expensive - no, it's all relative.

Lol, good point.

Needless to say the name is very much after the watch, rather than the car. Still, what can a Daytona Spider do that my 196,000 mile V70 D5 can't ?

The current model has a 1861 which is also space flight qualified.

Lorneg - thanks for that, but £200+ for a book is more than I've paid for all but two of my watches !! Have made a few more enquiries though and whilst I'd prefer the larger 42mm case, finances will probably dictate I'll end up getting the smaller 38mm.

No great shakes though, still a beautifully engineered and designed watch that will compliment my Seamaster chrono perfectly.

Ps, strange you mention Sonny Crockett as well - dress down Friday at work today and I wore my linen suit. Wore socks as well.....

My Speedy GMT is 44.25mm in size, so probably the wrong way for you. However, it wears very nicely and fills the gap between a standard sized Speedy and something like a P.O.

MattOz-just googled the GMT Speedmaster model, now that is a seriously nice watch. Broad arrow hands I presume ?

Suspect it's a tad out of my price range, but still very envious.

That sounds like the one. Mine has the white face. I have both the metal bracelet and the leather strap with deployant, so it can be either utilitarian or a bit more dressy. Cracking watch and love looking at the movement through the sapphire back. It really is a lovely daily.
