I am obsessed with getting a gold DD2 (to go with my tracksuit lol) but the prices on the second hand market seem to be falling month by month.

Of course, this is to be expected with any gold watch but I'm wondering where we will be in a year's time. 2 year old examples can be bought for a smidgen over 15K, which means about 4K per year in its first two years.

The DD1 will always put a floor on the DD2 prices I reckon (like a Ferrari 360/430).

Do you guys think this rate of depreciation is going to continue between the second and third year of existence?

I guess the question is, as i don't "need" this watch: should I buy one now @ £15k or wait a year and hope they hit £11/12k?

You're right of course. They're a bit ropey at that end of the spectrum though and decades old.

I bought the Mrs a Ladies gold pres. last year for 4K in perfect, serviced condition; it was 20 years old though.

Sadly with 8 1/2 inch wrists a DD1 looks like a child's watch on me, otherwise I would have bought one years ago.

Are you sure about that, I passed up a White Gold one a couple of years ago at 8k and have kicked myself ever since, as the same model and age seem to go for double that.

You think those are 'close to scrap' prices?

Problem with the old DDs is ALWAYS the bracelet; the Jubilee bracelets of the era always stretch if worn at all and they are often scrapped as just aren't wearable safely (1500 quids worth of gold). Most 60/70/80s DD are head only or with a very wobbly bracelet therefore.

I think they hold value pretty well - not as good as stainless Rolex, but then virtually nothing mass-produced does. Better than steel Breitling, Omega etc. You also have to factor in that a decent discount of 20%+ can be had from any AD on a gold Rolex. So they start at that point, already 20%+ below RRP which has a massive impact on second hand prices.

How much do you think that 1961 watch cost back then?

Back to my original point, the jump between a 2006 DD1 and a 2014 DD2 isn't that huge.

£6750 in 1961 would be worth about £135,000 today, if it only kept up with inflation. £15,712 represents about 1.5% per annum - not exactly a decent investment

Can hardly be classed as depreciation though can it?

I think they are current values, not RRP at the time.

I was wondering that - my parents bought a four bed house in a nice area for £3750 in the early sixties, so £6750 on a watch would have been an epic amount

I passed up a perfect Day Date birth year watch at £6750 not long ago (hadn't been worn since the bracelet was replaced in 2005 and had had a recent Rolex service). I regret that now. At that price they all seem to have wrecked bracelets.

I could have got about a third of that from selling my steel Datejust for God's sake. I won't miss the next good one at the right price!

I realise its a marmite watch but I love mine. I'd talked myself out of one for years. I don't earn enough, I do earn enough but I'm not a company leader, It's loud its this its that. After a while I just said fk it and got it. I haven't really seen much I want since unless I jump up to Patek levels.

Yellow gold DD2, 2 years old for 15k- where?

Please post a link in the thread, even if it's of a sold watch.

DD2'S are very VERY rare in the UK used market. The number of full set, mint used watches sold by the reputable dealers in 2014 is tiny. I have generally seen 2-3 year old watches listed at around 17k, sometimes more depending on the dial. I have also seen 4 year old watches listed and sold for more than the price you gave.

DD1 seem to be going up in value. I viewed a mint champagne diamond dot dial DD1 (full set), 2002 watch, couple of years ago in London, was listed at something like 7400 and could have bought it for a bit less too. This was a central London shop too! Over the last few months watches much older, sometimes 10 years older consistently list and sell for more than this...

So 16k list really not 15, still that is a good price for sure for a two year old watch if it has the full set including swing tags, removed links (if any) etc. Have to say I'm surprised, it's the first one I have seen listed at 15,995 which is of that age.

Ivory dial would put me off, I know it's one of the less desirable dials and I personally am not a big fan of it, strongly prefer the champagne. I think I remember Iconic Watches listing a brand new unworn one with the same ivory dial for 17,500 last year (fixed price buy it now though so no negotiation).

Either way, the DDII is a stunning watch, hope you find a nice one- when you do go for it you won't regret it!

I went for a yellow gold Yachtmaster II last year instead of the DD2 (partially because I got an amazing price for an immaculate watch, as it happens from watchfinder). Looking to add a DD2 at some point this year.
