Whilst they say no question is a stupid question, this might possibly be.

Do brand new mainstream TAG watches hold their value, or generally drop in the same style most new cars do too?

Reason I ask is because I've fallen in love with one from their Carrera range, but at £8k for something I don't need, just want, I wouldn't mind knowing if it would be investment, or simply throwing money away.

Is it a question capable of receiving a response, or does it vary massively?

If you need to know, quite happy to maintain as brand new and not wear if that helps!

Don't ask why bother, for some reason I have a fascination with watches, even though I find them uncomfortable to wear!!!

Tags depreciate more than most. Didn't even know they sold 8k Carreras, that is nuts.

Hello

I am regularly offered Tag Heuer's as part exchanges and my honest view is that yes some models do depreciate heavily. Tag have made some beautiful watches in the last few years and many of them have been well in to the Rolex price range.

It is the expensive one's that suffer most. As an example I have been asked to sell a Tag Heuer Monaco LS. It is a 2014 watch and is unworn. It cost £6350 and I am trying to find a home for it at £3995! I would have thought that was fair value but in two months I have not had one enquiry.

The £1000-2000 models are stronger as they are still very aspirational watches.

I would recommend that if that is the watch you want try and spend some time finding an as new Carrera. Good luck!

A watch is only an investment if it is very rare, has a unique movement or is made from precious metals...otherwise they are mostly overpriced and never likely to hold their value. I don't think the TAG Heuer watches are any of these, but they look good and have the appeal.

I think the straight-forward answer is 'no'. But if it's what you want, you can afford it and don't plan to sell it in the near future, then go for it.

Personally I would struggle to justify £8k on a single watch, despite having a pretty big collection.

I also think that £8k could give you a good number of amazing watches with change to spare if you buy wisely.

Tag Heuer have just taken the brand down market buy reducing their prices. Given they're part of the same group that is taking other brands up market by increasing prices, it's not looking good for residual values of new Tags.

Old Heuers though, the only way is up.

I see what you did there smile

Joking aside, some Tags hold their value better than others for the very reason you stated as they are held in high regard by a certain segment of society. I mean, imagine trying to move on a similar priced when new Baume et Mercier to `Dave` living at 491 Benefits Drive?

Buy it if you like it, don't buy it as an investment.

I have a couple of Tag's, I love them, I also enjoy other brands as well, but none are for investment.

Ignore the watch snobs smile

I had a Carrera when they were around £1800 and I got a discount at that. I also struggled to sell it at quite a loss.

I can't imagine what they lose now that the price is above £3000. I replaced it with an Omega Speedmaster Professional and I feel that that was a good choice smile

that wasn't his question.......which was "do TAG's hold their value" ........it has nothing to do with watch snobs

The simple answer to the OP is No, they do not hold their value

True, but if you like something then just buy it, do people buy sub 10k watches as an investment?

Disagree. TAGs do hold their value. Although the OP may be somewhat disconcerted by the chasm that exists between their value and their retail price.
