In keeping with Shed's normal purchase, what watch would you get for £1000?
Some guidelines for your choice:
12. New or pre-owned is fine, but
2. it should be a complete punt, bought for fun, with no thought to 'appreciating value'.
4. Movement type is open choice; after all it's a shed so any movement is acceptable.
6. Replicas akin to a Ferrari-style body on an MR2 cut-n-shut will be frowned upon.
8. TAGs are excluded on the grounds of MG's blood pressure.
10. Some story of why you'd buy it, where you'd wear it, how you'd explain its appearance to Mrs Shed, previous laments, etc. will earn extra giggles.

There's quite a choice second hand at c £1000.

My choice would be a Sinn diver on the Sinn rubber/deployant or an Omega SMP - that's my current holiday/beater watch anyway.

And the mere existence of this thread shows what's wrong with the Watches subforum... Even as a laugh, considering pissing £1k up the wall on a watch?

But if it were £1k on a car for a laugh, then that would be totally fine in your eyes?

Shall we all save our money and toddle off to Argos for our watches in future?

Hi Tom, this thread was meant as an antidote to the (several) recent threads where the OP has been an investment buyer that tends to promote very safe, middle-of-the-road, brands. My intention was not so much "pissing £1k up the wall" as, like the archetypal shed with 12 months MoT, "what do you like so much you'd buy it even if the thing stopped and was valueless a year down the line", maybe an obscure brand or a unique design that just gels for you. Apologies for not conveying that in my original post.

An example is this Sicura Bullhead at £790 that, with shipping from Mexico and duty, would probably be around Shed money:

However, my wrists are too small for a 43mm watch, so I suspect it would remain an unworn curiosity.

For me it would be a Nomos Tangente 38 'Doctors without Borders':

It has a modern clean design, manual wind, and I think MSF do an outstanding job so the watch meets many of my personal preferences. I'd hope it would still be working in 50 years, but if it gave up after a year, I'd still have enjoyed wearing it. It's £57 over budget, but since a car would need tax and insurance, man-maths brings it within Shed's budget smile

For a £50 watch I have a Ben Sherman quartz with a blue 369 face, and customised CW strap, that fits so well when it stopped working I paid to get the movement replaced. But that's another thread entirely.

At the other end of the scale the "what watch for £50" thread appears to be slower these days to , that used to be more of a laugh.

Why is that 'wrong'?

What's wrong is that many people wouldn't consider a £1k watch to be a 'shed'. They'd consider £1k to be a lot of money. Many people couldn't conceive of spending as much as £1k on a watch.

If you were happy to spend £1k on a watch that stopped working after a year, the inference is that £1k isn't much money to spend on a watch and you'd be unperturbed by the £1k loss. That's what's 'wrong'.

Personally I'd consider the Nomos to be a beautiful watch that I'd be lucky to own. I wouldn't use the term 'shed' to describe a Nomos!

Also, I think the price of a watch doesn't always correlate with how much enjoyment a watch gives. Horology doesn't have to be about only very expensive watches.

OP was only making a reference to the PH Shed of the week, not suggesting that people look for 1k pieces of rubbish.

Also, isn't the phrase 'pissing money up the wall' something to do with alcoholism?

Ie "You've got no money because you pissed it up the wall" would mean that that person had spent all his money in the pub and then urinated outside.

This might have got off on the wrong note?

I think the OP was not so much making the statement that £1k on a watch is a menial amount of money to spend on a watch (as it is far more justifiably so on a car) but that in honour of the £1k shed budget we should find left-of-field watches for about that amount that might not be our first choices otherwise. Just a bit of fun. My choice to follow...

Meh I would call 100% Franken on that unless there is concrete proof otherwise from the Omega Archive.

Nice Tudor Prince Oyster Date from '81.
Discrete, under-the-cuff watch that is still
masculine and of good quality, as an Oyster it won't be fragile.
Would pair really well with my current Rolex 16610, a bit rarer and more formal.
Would love it on an Oxblood leather strap.
Only £30 over budget.

Is that what the Oyster bit signifies? Always wondered.

And yet here you are... OK, I'll bite.

Please explain how its any worse than, say, smoking. A mild habit of six a day would run to about £1000 a year.
With watch collecting at the end of the year you still have the watch. With smoking, you have clogged up lungs and an elevated risk of cancer.

How about boozing? What does the average night out clubbing cost a 20-something these days? Two trips a month, twelve months a year, how long before the clubber has literally pissed £1K up the wall?

Or holidays abroad? I mean, the tan will be faded in a month, all you're left with is memories.

Or housing, shouldn't we all live in 100 square foot flats? I mean that's all the living space we need.

Do you subscribe to the principle of "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need"? Because if you do, I have some news for you. Its been tried and it didn't work. If you're not Marxist, then what exactly is your problem?

I'm not interested in poking my nose into how much disposable income you have or how you dispose of it. I wouldn't dream of passing comment on your spending choices. Your choices are yours to make, not mine. Please take a moment to consider how that logic can also be applied to your comments on the watch spending habits of those on this subforum.

Excellent choice; I particularly like the subtly textured bezel. Suits you, sir.

(And your earlier comment about this thread was spot on too. Thanks.)

I did see that Schumacher (it's slightly over budget unless Dominic is feeling generous) and wondered what the 'watch & car' photo should be. There was a yellow Z4 at my local BMW dealer, but I think you trumped that! Well done.
