Been looking for a smart looking diver style watch for under 450ish that isn't a Steinhart...

Are these any good as a used buy?

I have a TAG 1000 Black Coral, the two tone black and gold one. It's so cool in a retro 80s way. They wear really small compared to a modern watch, but I really love mine. It's an ideal every day watch, mine is in aright old state, the PVD has rubbed in most places, I think a lot of the black ones are like that. When this one dies I will get another no question!

2000s are a bit meh, i had one from new in the mid 90s, it got stolen, I can't see me ever getting another!

Get a 1000, a classic and will hold it's value. Finding a good one though, not easy. A Heuer one, even better, but prices have already gone upwards.

So would this be a good buy?

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=2...

Or is the lack of original strap a big enough issue to get a post Tag one that's all original?

Or seemingly for much less one like this:

Both of those look ok, but have had bits replaced, this would not worry me for a daily. They both come with the orig bracelet, it will be stretched at best and scratched to hell and back and stretched at worse!
Only thing to bare in mind, is those are both in the US so you might get customs charges etc added on!

The 1000 is really cool.

I have a 2000 from the late 1990s which isn't a bad watch, but it's nothing special. I sometimes plan to list it for sale but then I can't be bothered.

I have a 1000 in blue that I was given by my grand parents in 1989 and I've worn it pretty much every day since. It cost £195 back then. No desire whatsoever for any other watch.

Thanks guys.

Really appreciate the feedback.

Going to keep an eye on those 1000s. I like the look of them, particularly on the leather strap. Will message the chap about the Huer one, if it doesn't work out I'll spring for the cheaper of the two (which appears to be in better nick, but that may be down to the pictures).

Quite keen on the 2000s as they are very similar in style to a certain submerged style.

Mine looks just like this:

It's not a bad watch and pretty comfortable. The lume is also good for the age.

I mostly wear it on a cheap rubber strap for rough jobs. I'd recommend one as long as you don't pay too much.

To me, it's perfect in it's understatement and elegance. As was mentioned earlier in the thread they're not as large as most of today's watches. Over the years I've had the lume refreshed, glass replaced etc. but the strap is original and has held up well.

this one looks like mine which is model 980 613N

Some say it's a James Bond watch http://jamesbondwatchesblog.com/tag/980-013/

This is interesting.........I have an original Heuer Sports 1000 in black and gold from 1985 including the original box and papers. I haven't worn it for quite some time but would it be worth approaching one of the watch gurus on here and have them get it up and running again ? By which I mean new battery, check and replace internals where necessary, fit the stretching issues on the strap but not replace anything externally as I like the "worn and still going well" look.

Thoughts ?

Can't see why it wouldn't be a good idea. Unless you'd pay for the refurbishment and then leave it languishing in its box again.

Ooh, that's a cool watch. If you decide to sell it, can I have first refusal?

just fit a battery first and see if it works. As long as the battery hasn't leaked, it should be OK. If not, then get it serviced, not expensive on a quartz.
Not sure what you can do about the stretched bracelet though.

Oh yes, very nice watch.

Cheers for the input guys, very much appreciated. I'll get round to having the battery changed when work calms down a bit and see how things go from there. If it works as it should I'll probably ping an email to one of the jewellery gurus on here and see if they can work some of their magic on the bracelet as I think it may just need an experienced jeweller to look at the links and reshape them for me.

I'm afraid the watch won't ever be sold as it was my 21st birthday present from my parents.............yes I am a fossil hehe

As long as it was working when you put it away, the likelihood is that it'll still work when the new battery goes in!

As for stretched gold bracelets, I gather that there are people who are recommended for their work on stretched Rolex bracelets, so maybe someone here will have a recommendation for you
