The omega speedmaster professional keeps catching my eye while I'm wasting time at LHR weighting for the flight home, if I remember correctly its up for sale at £2700. However when I look on line second hand examples seam to be going for significantly more. Are there different models of the moon watch or some other factor that has kept value of the older so high. Failing that should I start bringing them back from the airport?

You can get a good Speedmaster Professional 3570.50 used for a fair bit less than £2700 I think.

It's one of those watches you don't buy new if you want to watch it appreciate. If you're happy with the £2700 (a lot less than an Omega dealer in a shopping centre!) then go for it. I've had mine for about three years and it's a great watch. I think I'll wear it tonight, now I think about it.

Be sure that you're checking like for like, there are a number of Speedmaster models with black chrono dials. Look for a date, does it say "co-axial" on the dial, is it a bi-compax or tri-compax (2 or 3 subdials) and so on. When in doubt, refer to the model number.

Yes, this is good advice.

There are SO many different variations of Speedmaster. Get the Ref. Number and use that to compare, if you do it visually you'll get nowhere.

The main price difference will be between manual-wound movement and automatic (co-axial). A new co-ax Speedy is around £5k I think, so a big price difference.

£2700 doesn't seem bad, Beaverbrooks are peddling them for £3300 I think.

Once you've got a part number of the model you like, drop Dom H on here a line.
You'll be pleasantly surprised what he will come back with. I know I was!

How much would one expect to pay for a pre-owned 'standard' Moonwatch - hesalite crystal, mechanical etc.

I can personally vouch for this gent on eBay, also has an office and online shop.
Chris a friend of mine and deals with lots of new omega.
The watch in the link is the big box version, the box has got to be worth the price alone.
Good luck. Tell him Marcus recommended him.

I cant answer that, but the value would be tempered by the knowledge that they only cost about £1750 new until the st hit the fan in 2009.

Ive an Omega First man on the moon edition. Leather strap and its a mechanical. It retails for 3k ish . It can be found for less. I purchased mine at the Harrods
Boutique in Terminal 5.
Very nice watch , i just don't wear it enough. It doesn't have the hesalite unlike the original .

I am presuming the majority of Speedmaster's are Automatics?

A lot depends on recent (proven quality) service, condition, age, etc, but anything from £1200-£1800 (maybe £2000 for a recent, Omega serviced watch) for the standard model.

Once you get into special editions, vintage and the like, the prices go haywire...

The majority of "Speedmaster" models (reduced, co-axial, dark side of my shed, etc...) are automatic, but the Speedmaster Professional - "The Moon Watch" and all it's variants (Snoopy, Apollo 13, Apollo/Soyuz, etc...) are manual wind.

Just bought a moon watch off eBay for £1671, plus a tenner postage, 2003 model, boxed, papers etc, 1861 movement, so essentially the same watch as the current one which retails at £3340, can't fault it, seamaster for work due to the more durable sapphire crystal, speedy for good.

Of course, there are Speedmaster Pros with Sapphire crystals if that's what you want smile

Ye, but I kinda like the idea of the Hesalite, and it's easy enough to polish, plus the fact the Seamasters already pretty battered from 11 years of abuse so is destined to a life as a work watch.

The sapphire back adds about £500 to otherwise identical models.
