Thinking of a watch. He likes divers' watches and chronographs. I'd ideally like something that would stand the test of time. Budget is flexible but not going to stretch to a new Rolex.

His birth year Submariner or Sea Dweller are a little bit out of range. I have an Omega Seamaster so I could get one of those for him.

Any suggestions?

Seamaster is a lovely thing. Whatever you get, make sure it's fashion-proof. Gifts like a watch for 21st really mean most a lot of years down the line...

Given he’s 21-coming, why not just involve him in the process?
Let him choose what he’d like to remember his 21st with/by.

A Speedmaster, whilst not a diver, has already stood the test of time. Amazing looking piece and with strap changes would give an ever changing look to the watch over the decades.

Only major problem would be the manual wind - auto may be better.

Agreed. The watch I chose for my 21st (paid for by my parents) is one of my most reassured possessions.

A Seamaster or Speedmaster would be my choice but as said involve him and guide him towards something he'll treasure (as opposed to some TW Steel thing).

Gave our son an Aqua Terra for his 21st. He wears it almost all the time.

Cant't go wrong with an Omega. Seamaster would be my choice, a nice classic with the wave dial. Pierce Brosnan version (not the quartz though)

I would consider deciding on a budget, telling him what the budget is and letting him do his own research. If what he chooses is above that budget he can decide whether he wants to add to the funds.

This is what I did for my 21st and my parents were more than happy to do this. The budget was determined by what my brother had for his 21st at today's price which to may way of thinking is the only fair way to do it.

I took him to choose and he chose an Omega Seamaster in steel with a black face. Everyone is very happy.

This is a good shout or the Pelagos. Both have that Rolex diver look but are just that little bit more classy.

A dressier watch would also be worth considering. They will probably stand the test of time a bit better since they are less cluttered. Something like this:

For a 21 yo? I think I'd have found that a little too boring at that age

It is classy and understated - that to me is the antithesis of boring.

Its a watch they will like now but love as they grow older. A sports watch that is "of the time" will soon start collecting dust at the back of a drawer as his taste matures in to something more refined.

You get a lot of wrist presence from those big faced IWCs and they look just as cool with Jeans and a T-shirt as they do with a suit.

All IMHO of course smile

Ordered my son a black faced Daytona well in advance for his 21st.

Got the call from the dealer telling me the delivery date had been knocked back so ended up getting him a Sea dweller at list less ten per cent.

To be fair I think the Sea dweller was better suited to him than the Daytona.

The Daytona came about three months later so I ended up buying that anyway and put it in the safe where it still sits , I've got a white Daytons which I wear on a regular basis before anyone moans.

That's just greedy, innocent members of the public have died on waiting lists because of people like you
