I am a sucker for decent packaging - dive kits, spare straps, tools, that sort of thing.

I think this is my favourite of mine. It's an Asprey No 8 COSC chronograph.

Comes in a large wooden box:

The interior is the most wonderful soft hide:

Compartment in the lid for docs, and a small one for straps:

The best bit though is the cushion. It's a removable travel case, again hand made in hide:

Let's see yours..

I prefer the case to the watch, on this occasion.

Frankly I'd prefer they spend enough to protect the watch and save the rest of the money.

Would you specify it if the box was optional at £200 more?

Well, if ever I saw a £200 box, that's it.

If you are spending a lot of money on a luxury item then a (very) nice box like that, especially with a built-in travel case like that, is a reasonable part of that. A £10k watch does not belong in a bit of bubble wrap in a fag packet, even if it would go in one.

I suspect many of us have spent similar to 'complete the set' on pieces picked up without box and papers. I certainly have.

I have never understood the importance of the box. It means absolutely nothing to me.

I seem to recall the late great George Daniels would supply his masterpieces in a bog standard jewellery box. He could never understand why anyone would need more.

Take a look at the "6B - H↑S9 - MK2" pilots chronograph by 6b Watches. If you click on presentation options 1,2 & 3 you'll see some beautifully crafted packaging that has obviously had lots of thought put into it.

One of my favourite watch boxes is an old,1964, Seiko Silverwave (their first waterproof watch)box. Rare as the proverbial etc and seems to sum up the time.

I love those Corum boxes. As someone mentioned above, the current Speedmaster Moonwatch packaging is fantastic (though the price did go up £500 on its release...)

Apart from it being nice 'wrapping paper', does anyone actually use the box for anything other than putting it in the back of a wardrobe in case you ever need to sell the watch?

Yes. I have about 4 watches I use regularly. None are especially expensive (indeed the opposite) but they live in the boxes in a drawer. Some of the boxes are just a cardboard box in which the watch lives, wrapped around a balled-up sock.

No. I'll gladly take a discount on a watch to buy it without all the packaging. I'll bet the fancy new Speedmaster packaging costs them all of £20 to buy in though.
