Which dress watch?
Discussion
For my children's 16th Birthday (they are twins, one boy, one girl) I am planning on buying them a dress watch they will hopefully keep forever.
I'm after the classic dress watch look, plain face, leather strap as these will be for special occasions. I have a budget of £2k for each watch. Ideally I'd like the exact same watch in a man's size and a woman's size to save arguments over who had the best watch.
Which watches should I be looking at?

Cartier Tank Solo is right on budget.

You should be looking at none, unless you’re involving the pair of them, individually – I can’t think of anything worse than someone asking a bunch of random strangers to tell him which watch his children should be getting.
If you don’t know their tastes, what makes you think any of us do?
And £2K each – pointless, especially if both have shown not even the slightest interest in watches. The amount spent is secondary to the memories whatever the watch they choose for themselves will generate.
Furthermore, will you or they be willing to put £3-500 into servicing each watch, every 5 or so years?
Will they be happy with a mechanical watch that’s off by 5-10 seconds per day? That stops and needs reset when not worn for a few days, or longer, given you’re asking about dress style – how often will they be worn?
Sorry to be so down on you, but you’ve not really sat and fully thought the idea through – there’s more to buying a watch as a gift than the simple act of choosing one and handing over payment for it.

To be honest that's probably the best approach. Anyway 16 isn't a significant birthday is it? (well you know what I mean) But surely 18 is the notable one and also 21. As you say something fashionable now and get a decent one for their 21st. When someone mentions a dress watch at that sort of budget I automatically think of a Longines Master Collection. More or less fussy dials depending on taste although I'm not sure if the sizes will suit your daughter or if she will be interested as mentioned by others. Most of the girls that age in my family or friends families would rather have a Michael Kors, Vivienne Westwood or other fashion label watch which can be had for a couple of hundred pounds. You know your kids better than me but I'd recommend taking a look at the Longines models.
Two years and the boy will start his drinking career so I'd suggest something cheap but classy like a Seiko Sarb033/035 or 065. You could get him one of those and a nice dive watch too. Doesn't help but for my imaginary £2k I'd get a Seiko PADI, sarb 033 and a Legend Diver!
No idea for your daughter but I bet she'd appreciate some custom jewellery more than a watch.

Legend Diver is a lovely watch . I'm getting one at weekend as the Oris competitors price just jumped 10%!No idea for your daughter but I bet she'd appreciate some custom jewellery more than a watch.
For those who have given suggestions for watches, thank you.
For those who have made nothing bit assumptions about my kids or what is right for them, well you know what they say about assumptions.
They already have a cheapie diver watch, that they worked hard to save for.
16th is a decent milestone, end of GCSEs and on towards adulthood proper. We have already decided on a car for the 17th, a house for 18th (although it'll be late as we have to wait and see which uni they end up at), and yes another watch at 21.

It's a bit hard to make suggestions WITHOUT making some assumptions, to be fair.
I think you'd be better off buying a sports/casual watch for the 16th and a dress watch for the 21st, if you're already planning on buying another then.
I've no idea what your children are like at 16, but I think I can safely say their tastes will be different at 21 and 31 than at 16, so I'd favour something that will be a day to day wear today and look at something 'for life' later.
My tuppence worth, anyway...

If I'd ask for general watch recommendations I would have agreed, however I'd been pretty clear that I'd wanted a plain dress watch, which hasn't varied a huge amount over the years. Its a bit like posting a what car thread asking for advise on which MPV and getting (serious) responses suggesting a 911 as "the kids will fit in the back".I think you'd be better off buying a sports/casual watch for the 16th and a dress watch for the 21st, if you're already planning on buying another then.

Plus I'd question spending £2,000 on a present for a teenager.
