My wife's Longines watch stopped
Discussion
My wife's Longines watch has decided to stop. It's a late 2011 model. Had a new battery several months ago, but today started the jerky second hand sweep indicating a new battery requirement.
Bought a couple of new batteries and fitted one.
Watch restarted ok, but an hour later watch was dead. Swapped battery but watch still dead. Checked voltages on all 3 batteries. New ones show 1.58v and old one showed 1.35v.
Any ideas re the fault?

Movement knackered? If you get it repaired I suspect they will just change the movement, they don't service them as far as I am aware.Bought a couple of new batteries and fitted one.

I'd be annoyed if the movement has failed - it was a £700 watch and should last longer than 5 years IMHO>
Send it back to Longines with comments along those lines. You may well find that they agree with you and repair it FOC. I'd probably do it via your local Longines AD, ideally one with an in-house repairer. It is possible that it's something simple you've overlooked.13m said:

To be honest, It's not rocket science anyway, I've changed batteries on my Tag and Longines watches lots of times before anyway. They are no different to a cheapy watch generally.
No different to the concept of changing an oil filter on my Porsche or my Golf...
It is if you're hoping for a goodwill repair. It's the same with out of warranty car repairs, a full dealer service history means a much better chance of a manufacturer contribution, diy work makes such much less likely. No different to the concept of changing an oil filter on my Porsche or my Golf...

Not so, change the cams on your Porsche then take it to the Porsche garage to tell them its knocking, see how far you get.
Omega hate it so much that they put a tamper seal on the case rear, they don't like 'in the shed horologists'.
You also say its not rocket science, and your dead right, but you can't fix it can you ?
Well I have changed the battery on several occasions with success. And I fitted the latest one that worked for about an hour before the watch stopped.

So yes, I can't fix the issue it has now. But I believe I carried out the battery swap ok.
Anyway, not worth a debate on that side of things..

Without seeing it I can't say, but I'd guess at dirt entering the movement somewhere. Mechanical watches will generally just keep grinding away until they wear themselves out, but it doesn't take a lot to stop a quartz. If you do send it to Longines with a complaint letter at least check the movement for thumb prints or the like. Not a dig, but because "anyone" can replace a battery you do tend to see some rally manky attempts and some with damaged contacts, etc.
