Hello folks
I am looking to buy a watch for a significant birthday for my other half.
It needs to be a particular type. Square faced with leather strap and have been drawn to ladies JLC Reverso.
I have read conflicting stuff on line mainly concerning quality of finish and was wondering what people's opinions were
A good quality watch worth buying or maybe there are better options out there?
I am looking to spend circa £3k
Any help greatly appreciated

I bought my wife one many years ago - a very beautiful watch it is too.

Do bear in mind that some are a quartz movement. That doesn't detract from the watch, but many would buy a JLC as they would like a mechanical movement.

I'd like to get my wife a gold one on a gold strap, but it's hard not to feel a bit short-changed by the quartz movement. That's probably just snobbishness on my part as she couldn't care less what movement it has.

Being charged £90 for a replacement battery stings a bit too.

Apologies if this is off topic, but is there a reason why so many ladies watches have quartz movements? Is it just a size thing?

Yes - ladies watches are generally thinner and smaller in circumference. There are examples where there are very small mechanical movements, but they tend to be hideously expensive for a decent one. I think the ladies Rolex day/date is one of the better small automatic movements....

Cartier Tank or Santos
Cuervo Y Sobrinos

If you use chrono24 to get an idea of what’s available, use Karree/Carree as a search – there’s some nice Girard Perregaux Vintage 1945 and Glashutte Original models to ponder.
Don’t automatically assume all vendors have put their watches in the correct category – if you filter out Mens, you’ll miss some that may be womens' size or at 33-35mm, might still be suitable.

OH has two of them..a gold/gold strap Reverso Duetto (mechanical) and a steel/leather Reverso quartz. Both are excellent. It is amazing how much lights the quartz watch is but quality is excellent.

I bought my wife a Reverso Lady for a significant birthday- she didn't know much about watches but was over the moon. Manual version rather than quartz.
I like it so much I'm about to get a 1931 tribute

I have three Reverso models, plus others in the household.

Nothing wrong with the finish at all in my experience, and absolutely nothing wrong with JLC quartz either. For a battery change on the quartz models, any high end competent watchmaker (ie, a reputable main dealer/indy, and not Timpsons) will be able to change it - the battery is nothing special, it is just a complex case made of multiple parts that requires disassembly to get to the battery. A full service on the quartz is significantly cheaper than on the manuals too.

Are you planning on getting the back engraved?

As for sizing, it is essential she tries one on as they wear very differently. Start with the lady reverso, then up to the classique, then grande taille - the latter is 42mm x 26mm so traditionally a mens watch, but can look good on the right female wrist.
