Hi all,
I'm going to the Goodwood revival and would like an appropriate wristwatch. My car is from 1962 so I guess something from between the 40's and 1960. I want to spend about £200 max and want a watch which is wearable everyday. I've also looked at trench watches as I think they are very interesting.
Can anyone advise me where to look or to speak to
Thanks
Barrie

Omega Seamaster or similar quality brand (Tissot, Longines, etc), if you're lucky, but probably £300 or more - might be worth stretching as they're easy to sell.

My Omega (Seamaster '30) from 1961

My Novus from 1962

A nice Smiths from that era would probably be around £100 - The Novus was about the same.

Or from a little later (1967, but earlier ones are available, even '62)

Hamilton make a modern version of their iconic 1950's Ventura watch (not a dirt cheapo watch by any means, but I know a few people that wear these modern versions as their every day watch)

Accurist do this very cheaply:

Nothing special but it does look the part.

Also look at Laco or if you want to invest a little Longines do their Heritage range.

In that price range you are looking at some of the lesser known brands. Gruen, Waltham, Elgin, Garrard. All very good watches. A mint Hamilton or Rado from that era is likey to be between 200 and 350 depending on exact model.
A Seiko or Citizen from Japan would also fit the bill.

Avoid anything from India, Argentina, the Ukraine or anywhere with high humidity. Head over to ebay and have a gander. Ask for an opinion when you find something and I(we?) will try to help you avoid a dud.

Be aware that vintage mens watches were much smaller than is normal now.

I have my grandfather's 1951 Helvetia; very similar to this:
https://watchguy.co.uk/service-helvetia-calibre-80...
The setting lever spring had to be replaced on mine too.

As Mike said, at 33 mm it is discrete but also shock- and water-proofed (so ideal for Goodwood ). Manual wind lasts about 24 hours, so I tend to give it 10-12 turns morning and evening. Only takes a few seconds, and I find I get less range anxiety than with an automatic movement.

A quick look on the bay of entropy has several within budget.

If only it wasn't quartz... I'd quite like that with a mechanical movement (the tick motion of the second hand really annoys me).

A Dan Henry?

A vintage watch collector turned designer. These have been well received by the watch press, they're modern and you therefore don't have the vintage concerns.

This is their 1963 model. Yes, it's quartz..but it's a looker.... https://danhenrywatch.com/products/1963

I'm fortunate in that over the years I have been handed my father's, grandfather's and uncle's watches.

I like this one for Goodwood. It's an Accurist from 1945 and my grandad used to wear it on a broad pigskin band in the style of the ones below. Trouble is these days all the fashionable leather stuff is chunky and I recollect the pigskin straps were actually quite thin.

I agree, but given the size of the watch, it would have to be a bespoke mechanical movement, or trying to buy one in from one of the Swiss makers, and I doubt any make a mechanical movement for a watch that size that wouldn't be very expensive to buy?

High humidity / low integrity, or any combination.
