Guys I know this might have been done to death, but couldn't find anything?

I have never bought a particularly expensive watch. I do own an Omega Seamaster that I treated myself to a number of years ago, but have always had a real draw towards the gold and silver, blue faced submariner by Rolex. I was offered one a few years back by a friend who needed a quick sale at £4k. It was 3 months old and he had paid £6k for it at the time. They're now anywhere between £9k and £10k. I missed out on that one and have kicked myself since!

I'm thinking that if I bought a new one, which would be my preferred option, and kept it in very good condition, that it wouldn't lose any money. Now I know we can't predict the future, but given the way things have been for a number of years now with these watches, does my thinking seem feasible?? Would it be a good investment? I don't have £9k to 'waste' on a watch, but have always wanted one and might treat myself before they get any more expensive!

I think buying a brand new twin tone Rolex and expecting it to hold it's value might be a bit of a rash decision wink

Twin tone don't tend to hold their value as well as stainless steel sports models so you'd be better off going with one of them.

Second hand is a good shout too as even brand new stainless steel sports tend to dip a bit and then hold steady/rise.

Thanks for the reply, this is what I need to hear/read, as I genuinely don't know the market, and given it's a lot of money to myself, want to limit the potential pain! I have a few nice watches of a lesser value that I enjoy, but the Rolex would be a special occasion watch to keep it good, so don't want to buy something that'll haemorrhage money, hand over fist. I don't want one that badly, but would like one.

OP you really should get the watch that you want and don't get hung up on resale value.

The 116613 is a lovely watch however at £9900 new I do believe you would get some discount from an AD if bought new. Similar used watches can retail at over 8k, you will not haemorrhage money, buy carefully and certainly see what can be had new, before dipping into the used market.

Thanks, I know I should go for it, but it's a big purchase for me on a watch. If the shoe were on another foot and a friend was asking me, I'd be saying 'go for it. Life's too short, blah blah blah!'. I need to give myself a talking to and take the plunge!

I have found a Nov 2016 unworn for £8995, which seems like a good buy, particularly from an approved seller.

I have one (bi-metal, blue faced ceramic bezel) - it's lovely. However, when I bought it I knew it wouldn't hold its value in the short to medium term. You will be able to get a discount from your dealer though, which isn't really going to happen on the stainless steel models.

The easiest way I found was to tell my dealer I could get 20% off just by taking a flight and buying it from the shop in Heathrow. They couldn't do 20%, but certainly got close enough that it wasn't worth the hassle of taking a day trip - something over 10%, but less than 15% from memory, so within a couple of hundred quid at the time.

Motivational photo below. wink

Yes - you basically save on the VAT if you're flying outside of the EU, and while they never have any steel watches in there they usually have a good selection of bi-metal and gold ones as they don't sell as well - certainly when I was looking they had one of these on display, and I'm sure they have more out back. You'd need to "forget" to declare the watch when you came back into the UK, mind you - up to you whether that's an issue for you or not, but you're not likely to be stopped...

The other thing to consider is getting the watch insured - you might want to check the single item limit on your household policy. Happily mine (with AXA) will cover any single item up to £10k away from the home without me having to specifically declare it to them, but it's something to check. Would be particularly awful if you purchased the watch at a saving, and then it was stolen while you were away with no insurance to cover it!

Edited to add: the Rolex store I'm thinking about is in Heathrow T5 - not sure about the other terminals...

I'm only flying down to go to Bracknell and back, but will have a look and ask the question on discount. I guess they may discount to a degree if it's the decision between a sale or not.

I think my insurance does cover up to £12k as well as I made sure my Seamaster was covered away from home, but would like more if the values go up in years to come.

I have a 1984 SS Sub which was completely overhauled by Rolex in 2008 I bought it in 2010 paying £2600 privately its value now circa £3600 I should think. As been said brand new will drop a little but as Rolex increase their prices second hand rise also. So the long and short of it is if its a keeper you will not lose out

Premium watch prices have risen enormously in recent years. Will it continue - who knows? But fashions change and whilst s/s Rolex Sports watches have been very popular, this could easily change.

As said, buy what you like - that blue Submariner is a 'classic' - lovely.

Well gents, I bought the watch I wanted on Saturday. Right place at the right time. I was passing WOS on Saturday morning and the guy was sitting a bi-metal blue face submariner in the window. Story goes, it was requested by a customer, and he never came back for it and they couldn't get a hold of him.

I talked myself in and out of it a few times, but ended up buying it and couldn't be happier!

Thanks for the replies, and once I figure out how to upload photos, I'll get one up. biggrin

Congratulations.
They get better looking as they pick up a few digs and dings, making it your watch.
Enjoy it.

Lovely - well done!

As mentioned the centre links don't stay looking like that for long, and you'll find they get some small scratches quite quickly. All adds to knowing it's "your" watch though, and you'll not stress about it after the first couple of weeks. The first one I got was depressing though! biggrin

Thanks.

Yeah I'm sure it'll pick up a few scars along the way, but as you rightly say, it's making it 'my' watch, and somewhat personalising it! Lol.
