Tag Heuer Monza (sell Submariner?)
Discussion
So 3 years ago I had a good year and I bought the watch I'd always wanted - a Rolex Submariner Date. I bought it brand new and got a good discount. I thought I'd have it for life.
I love the watch, don't get me wrong, but there's something about wearing a Rolex that makes me uncomfortable. People clock it all the time and I notice them doing it. I feel like I can't wear it whenever trades people come round as the price will go up. The shiney ceramic bezel version does shout a bit, and is classic 'City' (although I do work there!). Some girl started talking to me on the tube just because of the watch. So superficial.
As I get older, and about to become a father, I feel like changing it to something a bit more subtle. Plus I'd rather release some money and put it into the mortgage.
I never thought I'd like a black leather strap watch as my 'main' watch, but I'm seriously considering a 2004 Tag Heuer Monza. So I have agreed a deal with a well known pre-owned company in the city where I get back marginally more than I paid for the sub, throw in an old Tag Kirium that need to get shot of, and take the Monza, and they return me a decent chunk of change. The only real thing stopping me is that I want more of a profit out of the Sub....and....
The fact that many people have said to me don't ever sell the Sub, from a value appreciation point of view.
Thoughts on how well a Tag Heuer Monza (non-calibre 36) would retain value?
Thoughts on a Monza as your all occasions, only watch?

I have a Monza too, won't bother with a pic as its the same model Hilly posted. Really like it, not too shouty and easier to wear than a Monaco.
Doubt it'll appreciate much, if at all if that's important to you though.
Know there's a balance of cash involved but not sure I'd swap out a date Sub for it, but more because that particular watch or an Explorer is next on my list.

That is really interesting that for you the sub has had so much attention. I reckon during the 15 years I wore Rolex watches they were never clocked more than a handful of times. When I went into jewelers I think they always have a look to see what you are wearing. I had a Datejust, an Air-king and various subs with and without the date over the years, it was surprising to me how little difference they made to me in any way, other than turning a small profit as I was buying aboard and selling in the UK when exchange rates were very different to now.
I wouldn't sell the Sub. Keep it and pass it down when you get too old to be able to see the dial anymore. In all the years I've worn Rolex watches, the only times they have ever been noticed are when Ive been into a jeweller's to look at other watches. To add to that, the Submariner is hardly the most blingy Rolex anyway. Wear it, enjoy it, f
k what anyone else thinks.
Make the Monza something to aim for over the medium to long term. Ive always found the chase as enjoyable as the catch.
