I have seen some pictures of Hamilton Field watches on forums recently. I have never owned one but I do like the look. I went onto the Hamilton website and came across this:

I like it!. The PVD is not a concern having owned a CWC SBS for many years and it is still unmarked. The date feature on the Hamilton could have been better done without cutting the 3 in half but its not enough to discount the watch. It's double the price of the stainless steel Field watches but when was a watch ever worth the asking price! Are there any Hamilton owners here who would venture an opinion. Is the movement accurate and reliable? Your thoughts please.

All the best. Phil

By the way. If there are any post stalkers here I am going to visit some shops in Edinburgh next week to have a closer look at the Rolex range with a view to making a decision!

Treated myself to one just over 7 yrs ago, for my 40th, love it, nothing to really say but it appears to hold good time, never let me down, still looks clean and fresh, despite me never doing anything do it.

Hamilton are an excellent brand, but suffering a little today compared to their American hey-day, largely because they’re a bit lost amongst the zillion other brands within the massive Swatch Group (Omega, Blancpain, Longines etc.).

Swatch have deliberately & artificially positioned (and kept) them in that mid-tier level/first-time buyer range, which is maybe a bit unfair, as they have an extremely illustrious history in their own right, dating back to the late 1800’s, with several notable horological firsts to their name. That’s all somewhat in the past now. At one time, they made virtually all the watches for the US Army during WW2, and 1-in-2 railwaymen relied upon a Hamilton in the infancy of the American Railways.

Their Field Watches are very respectable and worth having. They’ll probably have that coveted ‘Swiss Made’ appellation (but that’s a debate for another day), and use decent ETA automatic movements, which whilst very common, are renowned for being really reliable, rock-solid, nice-enough looking & cheap to service. Accuracy for the lower-grade ETA versions used can be a bit of a lottery, but should be no worse than +/- 20 seconds daily, which whilst not brilliant, isn’t too bad for a mechanical.

I have one of these: http://www.hamiltonwatch.com/collection/american-c...

It doesn’t have the fit & finishing of more expensive models, but for a stainless-steel bracelet, sapphire crystal front & rear, Swiss Made, automatic from a recognised Brand, it really doesn’t get much better in terms of value. For example, TAG Heuer use the exact same movement, and a similar stainless-steel bracelet & sapphire crystal, in their 'Carrera' models, and charge 3-4 times the price.

Thanks for the info. In hindsight I will probably go for one of the lesser Field watches. Perhaps the pvd one is not worth the expense.

I've got a Hamilton similar to the passion one above (but without the passion, apparently) that I bought used from Pesty. It's great. I use it as my holiday watch on a NATO strap - 200m waterproof, understated, reliable, accurate and - so far - robust. I love it.

Sadly I've no idea, by turning the single 'knob' to left of the face moves the words round, giving you a choice of

Passion
Innocence
Harmony
Freedom
Fraternity
Courage
Respect
Honor

Anybody else able to help ?

As long as it tells you the time you are winning. Why not buy yourself a wee £10 watch out of a charity shop.

The movement would be a lot more respectable if the adjustable outer rings (which on the AMADE edition show the charity's values and on mine show the world's timezones) bore some relationship to the GMT/T2 indicator. On mine if I rotate the inner bezel (as you would rotate the bezel on a diver's watch) the hole rotates around the dial revealing a new timezone that's probably irrelevant to your geographic location. Similarly, if you adjust the T2 indicator you'd think perhaps the timezone indicator would also shift... but it doesn't.

So although I love the look of the watch, the GMT/timezone/T2 functionality is largely decorative. But that's fair enough for the price.

Might depend what browser you're using, but if it's Chrome you can right-click a page and tell your browser to 'Translate to English' smile

I think the dial on this one is better designed but not a titanium case and different movement.

I have one of these on a black rubber strap for day to day casual wear:

I really like it. Gains a little each day, but a really nice piece and something different. Although I would have preferred a leather strap on a deployment clasp.

Sorry not my cup of tea. Looks like I would need a torch to read it. Advancing years, etc.

That's rather nice. Quite like the day feature.
