20,500 for a unworn 2016 example was the best deal I could find.
Makes sense to pay around 5% extra and get the day date II- although it will be a used watch will fare much, much better in terms of future value since it was discontinued in 2015, had a very short production run of just 5 years so will be collectible in the right condition and metal, prices have already risen by a decent margin, with watches very hard to find, especially the sought after yellow gold.
It was released at a time when rose gold really was all the rage so there was a disproportionate number of rose gold watches (certainly compared with the 36 mm version) so the yellow gold versions are sought after more than usual.

They are two quite different watches, despite only 1 mm difference, they have a totally different look to them.
I strongly prefer the larger day date II, as you say it is a little oversize but that's what makes it special. It just has a certain presence and appeal to me which the day date 40 does not hold. To me the 40 is far more a dress watch
Both are great of course.
Which metal are you looking for?
There is a unworn 40 at Mark Worthington- yellow gold, Dec 2016 watch, listed at 20,950.

I like the discontinued 41mm Day Date 2 in yellow gold....
I know the latest 40mm version had several improvements such as silicon inserts
in the bracelet links etc but didn't they have problems with the new movement and
irregular day/date change?? If I spent 20k + I'd want the watch to function properly.....
