Had a Police watch few years ago which got damaged and since then had nothing so I am after something new. Any advice please. I like the below sort of style as in metal strap and design.

Any brands I should look out for? There seems to be lots of 'fashion' type brands for in this price bracket. I was looking on watchshop . com as a guide.

To narrow the search:
1. quartz or mechanical?
2. new, pre-owned, either?

You'll get a lot in the used price range.

If a name doesn't bother you, Christopher Ward are great. Going used you would certainly be able to pick up an automatic.

Seiko and Hamilton as well.

If you want a name brand - Used Tag? £500 will get you a Formula 1, Link or Professional.

If you wanted a high street brand, the only ones that catch my eye are the Gucci Dive ones, seem to be well recieved by owners and reviewers too, but you more of your money goes on the name than it does the movement (which for 80% of people is fine!)

Push it to £600 and I'll give you a black faced Max Bill Chronoscope on mesh with a very slight scrape on the glass (which will shortly be appearing in the classifieds).

Just buy a Seiko. No need to go anywhere near £500

Such a shame it's the black faced one frown

Seiko for that money.

Might be able to find a TAG as mentioned, Hamilton, or possibly something like a Longines or ORIS on offer, if you get lucky.

I personally have a few Citizen Ecodrives (around £100-250) that I absolutely love. They are bloody brilliant watches for the money.

There's plenty of non fashion brand stuff out there at your budget point. If you can live with the "homage" background, for that sort of money Steinhart offer superb value. I use this as my daily and it was about £300 so if it gets broken or knocked about, it's not an issue.

edited to add, just noticed Dans post

Though some of the Hamilton watches are also good.

I just missed a lovely looking Oris for that kind of money on Ebay.

Lots of interesting watches at that price point second hand.

New? Seiko or Citizen? Many very good looking and high quality pieces in their range. And they always sell well under retail.

That's a £49 watch which costs £349, but if that's what you like you may as well just buy it.
