I'm looking for a new decent daily, something my mother wished me to buy when she passed earlier this year.

She left me a budget of 5k but I may top up for something special.

Budget £5-10k
Criteria - something classy vs blingy
ideally something that holds its value reasonably well
Not completely against the idea of a SS Rolex but seems to be a fairly unimaginative choice

Potentially something I can change the strap on without too much hassle, ie swapping black leather to brown leather strap when smart vs casual etc.

One final question, I live outside the UK, is it possible to buy without paying VAT if you order online/over the phone?

All ideas are welcome.

1. Spend plenty of time looking on Chrono24, including the many brands you’ve never heard of.
2. Buy pre-owned or with at least 25-35% off list if residual is of any concern – otherwise treat it like any other depreciating asset, and just enjoy it.
3. Presuming you’re not in the EU either, then you should be able to buy new without the VAT, but pre-owned will not differ by as much since the VAT typically on the margin. You may face import duties & VAT when it arrives in your country, which could offset the saving you were hoping was going to be made.

IWC Spitfire? Doesn't have to be gold if that's a bit bling for you..

I know they used to use ETA movements, I assume they're in house nowadays?

My new Daily. DJ41. Some would say a little "blingy"?
I think it's classy though...

Another vote for UN here, great watches. In another league to Rolex Omega etc.

Or how about a Panerai? You could get a nice 687 for under £10k smile

It really is the unimaginative choice but they're so nice and fit the bill perfectly (in my opinion of course).

Keep it casual with the Oyster Bracelet or upgrade to a Jubilee if you want a little more bling.

I think I'd go for a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for that budget.

I think these are lovely and was quite excited about one. I saw it in the flesh however and it's huge. You need a good sized wrist to carry these off.

I've just added a Jeager-LeCoultre Deep Sea Tribute to my small collection and I think it's perfect as a classy, dress up or down style of watch. Strap choices are broad...just look at some on Instagram. Looks great on green canvas also! Plus, how many people can boast a mechanical alarm on their watch, that's something special. I have a few other well known watches like a Rolex Sub, Breitling 806 Navitimer, Panerai, IWC XVI and this one gets the most attention/comments and you'll be lucky to ever see anyone else wearing one. There's also an American model with a variation on the face and it looks ace. Less subtle but very cool. All of this is subjective of course, but just my two cents...

Thanks All, some really good suggestions and food for thought.

Now, I do really like this JLC, something different and classy about it.

Do they still manufacture it? what is the RRP? If not, am I best to head to Chrono 24 to get an idea of what they go for?

Very sharp :-)

I live by a simple motto, buy shoes from a shoemaker, cars from a car manufacturer, watch from a watchmaker.

also very smart, do you have any ideas how well they hold their value? I'm not expecting Rolex appreciation, but it would be nice to know its not going to drop 70% in 3 years.

Have you considered Zenith?

Something like this:

http://www.watches-of-switzerland.co.uk/Zenith-El-...

Would look good with a suit or jeans and has a long and illustrious history.

Depreciation may be an issue but if you are getting it tax free and it is something you are never likely to sell does it matter?
