Is it possible? I’ve seen a lot of them go on eBay (for instance) for £6000 but that’s through a grey dealer etc.

Has anyone here managed to get a vintage one within my budget? Or would anyone be interested in selling one for that sort of money. Or am I being unrealistic in my search?

I think a Day-Date may be out of reach, unless one that’s a bit tatty can be found. A Datejust or a perpetual will be much closer to that budget and will be in better condition/newer for the same money, purely as they were cheaper to begin with.

IMO eBay is a slightly risky place to buy, unless a guarantee is given.

Yeah, as you said - I’d only buy with correct paperwork on a collection anyway.

I’m interested in the snap clasp, where the Rolex logo sits on the bracelet instead of the rectangle clasp like the older ones. It’s my first Rolex so I want something newer, is it worth me saving more for a president? A few have told me to stay away from an all gold Rolex and go for a stainless for investment.

First time buyer, so looking around at what’s the best option really.

I would certainly recommend stainless steel over gold, but I know nothing about watches!

I bought a stainless steel/white gold bezel DJ with a very dark blue (almost looks black, but isn't) face with the diamond spots on 1-2 and 4-11 positions (sounds tacky but looks clean) about 15 years ago for £3k to £3.5k (I can't quite remember).

I never once considered it to be an investment of any sort and so last year when the clasp wasn't closing properly (and some other niggles) the dealer I bought it from said it needed to go to Rolex for a refurbishment at a cost of about £700.

I asked if there was any point given what the watch must now be worth (assuming 15 years had taken its toll on the original purchase price) and was shocked to be told it was worth at least £7k!

Good luck in your search.

Maybe I should do the same, I always assumed stainless would be easier to sell also.

It's definitely possible to get a good one without the bracelet well below that budget - I did earlier this year and it's barely left my wrist.

You might find one with the President bracelet for your budget, but I'd be very wary that the watch is working well, not over polished and that the bracelet is genuine. You can buy fake bracelets for about £35. All Day-Dates are precious metal either white gold, platinum or the more usual yellow gold. 1978 onwards they got a quickset feature which helps if it's only worn occasionally. Mine will easily go 48hrs without running down so as long as I wear it every other day I don't need to worry.

+1, always thought the DD was a tad OTT in some specs, but that looks ace!

Two on here.

Good rep as a dealer and they often have vintage DDs and OPs on straps instead of bracelets.

I forgot I had posted here! Yes that's the one, but with the chunkier strap. I'll find a pic. smile
