Milestone birthday coming up and want to treat myself to a much desired watch: steel Daytona.

Though having recently looked at prices, I suspect it will be c£10k when I look to buy and its seriously made me question the decision.

When I first saw them, they were £4-5k but at £10k, its a serious amount of money. Which got me thinking on whether I should look at several pieces instead? Or whether there are other watches at £10k that would be ‘better’ than the Daytona???

If I was in your position I would buy the watch I wanted.

Will you regret not just getting the grail after a few months?

In regards to the Daytona; are you looking to purchase a new ceramic version? there is a very long wait list for the ceramic, i waited 3 years for a pre ceramic stainless Daytona

The only other Rolex with a list anything near that is a deep sea blue dial... which i find it too uncomfortable to wear all the time...

A Daytona is probably the most desirable Rolex - out of the 'mainstream' watches. like you say the value has increased that much in a short time frame, are they likely to go down?

If it was up to me, I'd bite the bullet and get the daytona. It's a lovely watch

If it is the Daytona you want, buy the Daytona. Don't even entertain the idea of buying more than one watch for the total budget.

I have seven watches and have two friends with about the same number and one friend with 50 or so watches. All of us would buy the 'one watch' if we had our time again.

The one you want seems expensive until you look back after a few years and realise you spent more in total on a bunch of watches that don't really hack it. (pun intended).

I was looking on ch24 as to second market prices, but they are already at £8k+ for a reasonable steel version.

I don’t mind going on a waiting list as then it will coincide with my bday, so that’s not the issue either.

I suppose I’m going wary of whether the Daytona is ‘worth’ £10k, hence the comparison to other manufacturers on the ch24 market.
The watches on the several list were El Primero, Panerai, Master Compressor....

If you are happy to join the waiting list and wait, assuming you get one in time for your birthday, then do so. If it's a birthday watch and of personal significance, I assume you aren't going to contemplate selling it anyway, in which case it doesn't matter what happens to the value of them. If you fall on hard times and are forced to sell it in the future, you can be confident that the steel Daytona has got rock solid residuals and I cannot see that changing for a very very long time.

Get the watch you desire, and enjoy the wait. The chase is half the fun!

ETA - the alternative watches you mention will certainly lose a lot more in value than a steel Daytona ever will, so when you get bored of them and need to scratch the Daytona itch, you'll be a lot worse off....

Gold Daytona’s seem great value these days given how daft the SS pricing has got.

I was never a fan of the watch until I seen (then shortly after bought) one of these.

Less than 4 years ago I paid what SS ones go for one and they still don’t sell for hugely more.

Hadn’t considered the precious metal version of the Daytona, so will look at those.

The others mentioned would be used (which is not an issue for me, just condition), so all depreciation would be lost already pretty much.

My only consideration is that I hope to pass these to my young son when he’s old enough.

I didn't read through your whole thread here - BUT good luck getting on the waiting list for a new stainless steel daytona
Also, IF you get on the waiting list, no date guaranteed, when they call you, you'd better pick up the phone and go lift it right away, as they will give "your slot" within a couple hours to the next person on the list - and then, well, you missed it.

Unless you settle for a bi-metal or full gold daytona (white or yellow), easily obtainable from any Rolex retailer, your best bet (and by far the easiest): pay the premium and get a second hand one

If you want a new Daytona, and are happy to wait for a couple of years, I think you'll be able to get a secondhand but unused one at list within this time frame. The last Daytona sold at well over list for a couple of years but eventually you could find unused ones at retail from most dealers.
