Rolex Sea Dweller Anniversary
Discussion
Went to the Metro Centre with family today and Dad and I decided to have a trundle around the watch shops, and to be frank we were astounded at what we saw...

This is a long standing Rolex dealership (not authorised) and as far as I'm aware turn over stock at a decent lick. To be honest I thought after this years BW and attention on the new models, prices would settle down. I mean there is no way this watch should be worth 50% above retail is there?

Total Joke. This is one of the main things frustrating me about the supply and demand situation around Rolex steel sports watches.
Rolex need to increase supply, this is the only way to stop grey scammers upping RRP by 50% for 'in stock items' and it will not devalue the brand because they still cost a lot more than many other premium watch brands. As far as i'm concerned this whole situation is caused by Rolex themselves with lack of supply and stupid AD waiting lists...
You only need to look at what watch finder wants for a 2013 BLNR above list, with its 'in house warranty' its a game i simply refuse to play.
Unfortunately there will always be someone who cant wait for the slow supply, has enough money to just buy it who does not care about % above list.

They don't need to increase supply at all, why dilute the brand?
For me, I'm on board with ADs keeping warranty cards for a year. It's controversial yes but it's seemingly the closest way to starting to wipe out scalpers etc. If you can get over the principle of the idea and you're a proper collector I don't see why it should be an issue.

I haven't tried to buy a Rolex, but there seem to be an awful lot of stories along the lines of, "My AD quoted an eighteen month wait, but called me three weeks later to say they'd got a Submariner in." So I wonder if the lead times are exaggerated to make it appear as though there's more demand than there actually is.
On Chrono24 there are currently 267 Rolex Daytonas in steel and ceramic, of which 207 are unworn, and 202 (164 unworn) Sea Dweller 43s. If anything, there's a glut of both models in the grey market.
If I wanted to get an in demand model, I'd find a dealer who's not feeding me too much BS, offer to put down a deposit, allow them to keep the warranty card for twelve months, and then just wait. Rolex have an annual output of 800,000 watches, and the market isn't what it was a couple of years ago, so I figure I'd get something eventually.
