watch sizes are quoted in mm - 36mm, 39mm etc.

But from where to where?

Despite being a powerfully build 6ft pistonheader I've got really small wrists (and hands - e.g my sister in law can't get my wedding ring on her finger!) for a man, so when i see a watch i like size really does matter.

Generally it's the diameter of the watchface excluding the crown. You'll see other measurements such as lug-to-lug which is basically vertically including the strap mounting lugs.

Scroll down to the bit titled 'cases'; case diameter is literally the diameter of the case without including any push buttons, crown (windy thing) or lugs (arms that hold the strap)

If you use a ruler and loosely roll it around your wrist, just up-arm from the wrist knuckle and where your watch normally sits, you'll get a wrist measurement. The average for most blokes is about 6.75 to 7.00 inches, and most blokes think they have skinny wrists but in reality have pretty average sized ones.

Edit: sister in laws are renowned for have chubby fingers, so her not being able to put your wedding ring on isn't the best gauge of how skinny your wrist is.
