I have always loved quality timepieces - especially those above my budget.

I have held out - but finally bit the bullet on an Apple Watch.

And to my surprise - I thought I would like it. But actually - I love it. A lot.

Now... here is the flip side...

The daily Breitling - I'm not wearing.
But - two shops down from the rather nice jewellers is a erm... tat shop.

But in the window - I saw this.
https://ugearsmodels.com

Do have a serious look at this - because - I think I have found a summer hobby to occupy my spare time..

But - it has also triggered in me ( eg train, safe, 20 minute timer etc ) - a need for getting a very understated and Joe Public unknown ( eg not Rolex ) - but brilliantly engineered watch.

The Apple Watch will be the daily.
The Breitling will be sold.
I will spend a few hundred on the UGears..
But... the craving for something special is itching me a lot.

Nooooooooooooo Don't sell the Breitling biggrin

I have seen that site before and there's a shop that sells similar near me in Kenilworth but I'm yet to decide if I want to take this up as a hobby too!

I also do like the Apple watch and think it does beat the Michael Kors equivalent.

There is also Androidwear but I think that's quite a bit behind.

I wouldn't sell the Breitling - you might get bored of the electronic watch as I did.

The Apple is an amusing companion to the iPhone, but it's a gadget, totally different to a decent watch.

Enjoy your Apple watch.

But don't confuse it with a fine Swiss mechanical time piece that will last a couple of lifetimes (with servicing), will retain value and won't be a near-worthless obsolete gadget in a year or so.

It's a nano-PC and tethered computer monitor that has a built-in clock.

That needs charging every day.

I have one that my Son gave me after he got bored of it, I've never worn it...

Have a smartwatch as well, opted for the Huawei Watch as I couldn't stand the square ones.
It does everything it says it does and more, but never felt like it added convenience. And as nice as it looked, I much prefer a quality watch.

Now I wear it two times a week when doing sports, I like it as I can change the music track and the like.

An original IPhone 1 sold for €4000 dollars in pristine condition.

In this age of “throw away, obselete technology” it’s easy to think of things as having no collectors value.

I have a number of (what I consider to be) nice watches; JLC Reverso Grande Calendar, Rolex GMT II BLNR, Omega Planet Ocean, Tudor Pepsi GMT. I also have an Apple Watch. I work abroad a lot in places that you probably don't want to be seen wearing a watch of value. I wear the Apple watch when I do. I was surprised at how much I liked it, having resisted buying one for a long time. It is still surprising how much I come to rely on it, especially when I get home and swap to one of my "nice" watches. I genuinely miss how useful it is for the weeks I put it away.

If you like it then bks to what anyone thinks. I've never been a fan of Breitling, but that's my own prejudices. They just look like gaudy jewellery to me, rather than a nice watch. However, given what I've just said my opinion is meaningless. If you think you can get by on an Apple watch until you can afford something you find more desirable than go for it.

I bought an apple watch a few years back and it's been my daily ever since. It's just so convenient to have call and message alerts and when I don't wear it I end up missing important calls. I switched to an android phone (Huawei P20 Pro) last week and missed having a smart watch so much I've already ordered a Samsung Gear S3. Thing is tho, I don't regard it as a watch at all really, its just an extension of my phone. I still enjoy putting a decent watch on for special occasions but for day to day a smart watch is just so convenient.

Me too. I felt a bit of a muppet initially, but it seems to be becoming increasingly common for all the reasons stated, hence I'm getting less grief than 12 months ago. On some days I opt for one or the other depending on what I'm up to, but most weekdays it's both.

Doubling up is a great shout. Just managed to pick up a Series 3 Cellular for under £300 from Nike so will experiment with the Premier League Referee look.

My wife got me an Apple Watch a few years ago. I was going to return as I didn’t really want one, but thought I’d give it a go,

I wore it non stop for about two years and really liked all the apps and dual time etc when abroad. Getting notifications for emails and text etc it’s all great.

Recently I was thinking about getting another good watch and got out my old favourite speedy pro. I was amazed how useless it was it just told the time and did nothing else.

After a few days though I realised how insidious the Apple Watch was at keeping me connected to everything all the time. I realised how much I’d been looking at my watch and checking stuff and it was all completely unnecessary.

I’ve now gone back to wearing my proper watches again and am really enjoying them.

The Apple Watch is great but you’re just wearing a little smart phone on your wrist. Sometimes it’s better to be disconnected from all that stuff and enjoy a great watch instead.
