I'd also have a look at TK Maxx as they sometimes have some bargains on there.
Otherwise have a look on Amazon for Citizen, Casio and Seiko. Creation Watches also worth a browse.

This is a great watch.
Replace the strap with a nice nato style strap.
Casio Men's Core MDV106-1AV Black Resin Quartz Watch with Black Dial https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009KYJAJY/ref=cm_sw_r...
It’s even better in tne fkesh.
Who needs a rolex or seko.

The Casio MDV-106 isn’t a chronograph, but is lovely!
I have that citizen military and it is excellent, with the exception of the strap which I find isn’t particularly comfortable and not great for excercise or if you sweat as it tends to smell. Still a nice silicone strap for £3.99 off amazon sorted that.

I too have that Citizen as my day to day watch....agree on the strap ditched shortly after I go it...but apart from that fantastic value for money I have that citizen military and it is excellent, with the exception of the strap which I find isn’t particularly comfortable and not great for excercise or if you sweat as it tends to smell. This looks like a good site for your son to have a browse. Search for 'chronograph' and it will keep him busy for a while. Ok he has narrowed it to two:
https://www.invictawatch.com/watches/detail/9211-i...
And
T
https://www.google.com/search?q=citizen+chronograp...
I have no experience of EcoDrive is it ok?

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that Invicta watches weren't all that great and were best avoided. Certainly in terms of mechanics and reliability at that price range below that of something like a Citizen or Seiko. https://www.invictawatch.com/watches/detail/9211-i...

As for EcoDrive it's the solar / light based mechanism that Citizen use to power their watches. My EcoDrive watch has been great - it just works.
Of that EcoDrive search list you provided, I used to have the very first watch in the list as my daily beater and I **think** the strap pins came loose and I lost it.....subsequently replaced with a new, but different EcoDrive. Not sure if it was just bad luck or a design flaw.
Out of those two, Eco-Drive every time. I now have two Eco-Drives and love them. As you can see, the watch face doesn't look like a solar panel, no idea how they do it!
Re the pinbar going, above, they can only handle so much pressure so if you catch the strap on something one can give way. That's the purpose of Nato straps - if one pinbar gives way, you don't lose the watch.

He has an invicta diver and it has been very good. But the eco drive is more a proper watch I think. It is quite large, but he has a 47mm Fosil smart watch and it doesn’t look huge.
Barring a last minute change of heart I think he will go for the Citizen.
How long does the rechargeable battery in the Citizen last?
