Omega service/repair - took a bit of a punt..
Discussion
I like a GMT watch and own an Omega Seamaster GMT 50th and a Rolex GMT ii LN.
Seamaster is from 2001 and I bought it in 2011, its not, to my knowledge, ever been serviced.
Having quite a few watches (30?) I don't wear it that much but it did do a few weeks out of the box with me and I found that it was stopping at just after midnight. Looked like the mechanism was getting hung up on the date change.
Now I live in Bali - easy to buy a nice watch but harder to service...as I found out when trying to get sense from Omega as to how to get it in for repair and service.
I'm in and out of pool and sea a fair bit so I imagine that its a good idea to get all the seals changed and well as the lubrication done etc. I didn't want it polished or bezel changed as its still in good shape and the few scratches there are, to my mind, add to the character of a nearly twenty year old watch.
Turns out Omega wanted it couriered to a service centre, to hang on to it for 3-6 months and the best part of 450 quid.
I mentioned this to some guys I use at a place in mall - they've fixed a loose rotor on a Ventus Mori and repaired my MWW Tatoskok after I stupidly dropped it on the tiled bathroom floor! (yes I have quite a few micro brands).
Got to say I was a bit doubtful, but they showed me a Panerai and a few others they were repairing for customers.
Took three weeks. They sent me updates via WhatsApp with photos. As requested they kept all the changed parts for me; seals, a little clip and another tiny thingywhatyoumaflip. Pressure tested and work guaranteed for a year. £90.
No longer stopping, been in sea with it and is not leaking, I've checked it against an app on my phone and its running at about -2 or 3 seconds a day.
I guess we'll see if it carries on okay or whether it catches fire or explodes or something...
I'll kept it on for a trip to Europe. Remains one of my favourite watches - like it a lot more than my Rolex GMT.
Usually on a Perlon but on a waterproof leather at present:
