I was looking at buying a Tissot as an every day watch. I've looked at prices on Jomashop and they seem reasonable... until you factor in the duty.
I've heard that the watches may be available from dealers in New York for similar, if not better prices. Is that true? My sister is currently in New York so it makes sense.

You're still liable for the duty if you import a watch using an aircraft and a wrist.

You need to send her to Macy’s, go to the customer service desk on the ground floor mezzanine and get a Visitors discount card.

The will get her an extra 10% off the purchase price on top of any sale prices normally ... bang it in the suitcase, or alternatively get her to wear the watch and either ditch the box or mail it to you (here is a post office in the PABT a couple of blocks away)

Thanks. Is Macy's the best bet then?

I've tried looking on Macy's website but Tissot isn't listed, in fact there's hardly anything on there.

This quote re-inserted by mikeveal as without it, it looks like I'm calling myself names. I may be getting old, but I'm not that barking mad yet!
What a perfectly nasty individual.
For once, I sincerely hope that you (or your sister) get stopped at customs.

They are great on price and with an easy decent returns process internationally - they definitely do Tissot, I looked at a T-Racer there a couple of weeks back smile

See if you can find a cheap off season flight to Gibraltar - I bought a Tissot Visodate last time I was there for £230, there seem to retail for around $400 in the US, so c£300 with the exchange rate.

Tell her to wear the watch and bring the box later

Thanks guys. I've been doing more research and from what I've read, tissots are basically cheap throwaway items. Can anyone advise?

On that basis, I was looking at spending a bit more and getting a Seiko. In particular an Alpinist. Or at least something quality that would hold its value. So with that in mind, I've upped the budget to £400. Is anyone able to advise on that as well?

Thanks.

Same company that owns Tissot owns Omega, swatch and Hamilton. I have one, it's an automatic chronograph and it's a nice watch. I also own several Seiko , Citizens a Seamaster and a Submariner. The Seiko automatic dive watches are substantial but unless you have the wrist for them. They'll look silly and they weigh a bit too much to be comfortable.

All a matter of taste but I would not call my Tissot a throw away.

I thought Tissot's were cheapish so probably within the duty free limits anyhow.

You may find them cheaper but I recently found that the current exchange makes many watches more expensive in the US than the UK

There is a Tissot shop on Times Square. Bought mine on Black Friday a couple years back and they were doing 50% off some of the watches.

But has anyone, at all, in the history of air travel, ever declared a watch, laptop, ring etc bought abroad?
I certainly wouldn't.

You won't be buying an Alpinist in a shop. The watch was discontinued earlier this year and all available pieces snapped up. If you want one, ebay or Amazon is your friend.

Read carefully please gents. I merely said you are liable.
