With too much time on my hands this afternoon, I tested all my mechanical watches for accuracy using the Hairspring app.

The winner was a TAG Heuer SEL Chronometer, which at 0.6 s/day knocked my "better" watches into a cocked hat. .

I bought it in 1992 and it was last serviced in the mid 1990s. It was last used in 2002 and has sat in various drawers since. When it was new, and after being regulated, it only started to run a second fast after about 10 days.

Given the bad press that TAGs get, I am quite impressed. I'd get it serviced and wear it, but for the fact that it looks so dated!

My Tag is spot on and I've never adjusted it in 2 years. My Breitling, Omega's and my daily donkey Tissell are all poor at time keeping over a period of time - ironic really.

It's a quartz movement though isn't it?
That's cheating - they're all way more accurate than a mechanical watch. hehe

They did quartz and auto versions. The Chronometers are individually numbered on the back, IIRC.

I have a Tag from circa 2003 or 4. Stopped working a few years later and I've never touched it since. I recall liking it. Probably just needs a new battery.

My Rolex has never been worn, just sits in a box in my cupboard. Bought it in 2014 for the price is a small car. Dunno why, really not into wearing watches anymore and haven't worn one since the Tag. I like watches, Tag is my favourite brand and I keep thinking I'll buy their smartwatch, but just know I'll never wear it. My smartphone has completely taken over that function and I don't wear jewellery.

Nope, automatic.

It’s also much quieter when winding than a lot of my other watches. In fact when he Tag was replaced by a Cartier in 2002 I thought the Cartier was broken because it was so noisy by comparison.

I don’t specifically but I know that a modern, quality, mechanical watch should be able to run -5/+10 quite easily so I prefer them to do so.

Though, I have learned through experience that sending a watch to be regulated can be a painful process and it’s far better not to be so anal providing that accuracy is not stupidly adrift.

Given I rarely wear a watch longer than a couple of days (week at the most) it always needs resetting next time I use it.
That said I do have a couple of super accurate watches (Bulova Precionists) which are my 'reference' timepieces used to set the others.

In the early nineties, when Heuer was owned by TAG, the watches were quite a different proposition to current TAG Heuers.

My first good watch was a 4000 bi-colour automatic and I bought it in preference to an Omega Seamaster, which it bettered in every respect.

I am planning to keep my TAG SEL until it and I become fashionable again.

I don't get the hate for Tag at all. There are a few current models that I quite like inc. the Gulf Monaco and the blue F1 (pity it's quartz) and the Carrera range are very good. I only have one Tag in my collection, which I've held on to for sentimental reasons and it was one of my most unreliable watches. I think it went back for repair 3 or 4 times and cost me an arm and a leg but it hasn't put me off the brand.

I don't doubt there are a few nice Tag's out there . However what does my head in is the newer models are handsome and nicely finished but with a standard movement (quartz) for around 1200 to 1600 pounds.

Is that because you have one? hehe

(I have one too, and an early / mid nineties 2000 series automatic).
