Hi all,

I am looking this time to actually take the plunge on a leather strap watch to sit alongside my ceramic Sub and G-Shock.

The plan is to wear it on rotation, but also with a view to number 2 son inheriting it down the road.

For these reasons, I have to love it, plus it has to retain value.

I will be buying used, most probably from watchfinder.

My question is - which is better in the potential appreciation stakes?

Leading contenders are:

Panerai PAM0048
Panerai PAM00312
Panerai PAM00392
Omega Speedmaster 57

Have Panerai lost their momentum as a brand? Is the big trendy watch fad done and therefore as a long term buy a bad move?

The investment analyst in me says a Rolex Air-King or Explorer put on leather would be smarter. But really I want a different brand.

Any thoughts appreciated?

If its going to be a long term wearer for you, then passed down to your son, why is the investment side important?

In theory, it won't be 'sold' for what... 30, 40, 50 years... if ever?

I know that if my father had worn a watch for 20 years then gave it to me... the 'value' of it in the open market would be completely irrelevant to me.

Personally, I'd choose one you like for right now and one that you think your son will like in the future. Sod the value/investment.

I have a Chrono daylight & PAM0048 in my collection. I like them both never keen on Omega but I guess its down to personal choice. The 0048 with the black face looks better on a leather strap than the rubber alternative IMO, the Daylight the other way round

I have a non date Air King too along side a Rolex Sub. As elegant and unassuming as the Air King is, it looks weedy against the Panerai's & the Sub. On the plus side the Air King fits under my shirt cuffs comfortably whereas the larger watches don't.

Dom Hackett at Hackett Watches has some nice pieces as does Iconic Watches in Blackburn. I have used both & would recommend I found Dom easier to deal with but would buy from either again.

Not sure about investment, watches can be down to personal taste, so if your lad is not into watches whatever you get might simply get flogged for something else. My advise would be if you like it I buy it and enjoy it. I guess if you buy sensibly you might not loose money if you need to sell.

I also like the Ulysse Nardin Macho Palladium 950 as an alternative brand to those above.

As above ignore the investment value as it's unlikely to be sold.

In general the view is a Panerai should be minimalist with no date.

My money would go on a Rolex Explorer on a peachy leather strap, whilst keeping the bracelet of course.

I've sent last week my grandfather's watch for service. He gave it to me when i was at high school and haven't really used it over the past 15 years. It is an Omega manual winder and pre dates my mom's birth by about a decade. The feedback from the service specialist is that the mechanism was is top condition. He even said to me that servicing it would not be a strict requirement but wanted fresh lubrication and check over anyway. So you understand where my vote goes to.

Thanks for your comments guys. I know I shouldn't worry about value appreciation, but I like the idea that it can be sold for more than it was purchased for, should it be required due to a change in circumstances. Especially knowing how the value of my sub has moved substantialy upwards over the last 5yrs of ownership. An insurance policy of sorts!

Regardless, I've tried a few on now. First off, the 44mm Panerais are too big for my 7" wrist. 42mm looked optimal. Did not like the cyclops. I also liked the Speedmaster 9300 co-axial a lot more than I thought I would! Actually preferred it to the Speedmaster 57, which I was not expecting! I think this is favourite now.

Any thoughts on the relative merits of Panerai vs Omega would be appreciated - quality, looks, time keeping (I believe Panerais are not COSC certified).

I am leaning towards Omega, due to comments on this thread, and my knowledge of the excellent 9300 movement. My worry is it's a bit too mainstream/common to be special, whereas a Panerai is a rarer sight. However, Panerai may not be a classic that looks as good in 20yrs time. Sylvester Stallone made them famous, and their appeal is slowly dwindling, and prices reflect that. However, I've liked Panerais for many years, and love the simplicity, and the ease of completely changing the look with the strap options.

Would love to hear further views?

I have Panerai and Omega, but not the models you mentioned. In both brands I've got the classics

Seamaster 300M (blue wave dial)
Speedmaster Moonwatch (hesalite)
Pam 00111

Investment wise the Omega's are doing very well (you can track this on Chrono24), the Panerai is ,simply put, a dog of an investment.

However, I love the Panerai because it is solid as a rock, easy to read and has a superb lume.

I love all my watches, but as my son is coming of age will pass one of them on to him, undecided which one. I didn't buy any of my watches for investment, they all get worn and beaten up - I bought them because I liked something about them, and when I give them away they'll take a bit of me with them to the recipient.

I disagree.... I too have both brands, an Omega Planet Ocean and a Panerai Luminor Marina amongst others. I think the Panerai is worth almost as much as I paid for it 2 years ago, looking around. The Omega however, is probably 2 grand less than I paid but prices seem to be on the up for it though. Whilst I love the Omega PO, and wearing it today, its the Panerai that I look at and feel proud to wear.

The investment view is model dependent, and in the case of Rolex it's also metal dependent. Gold Rolex is almost guaranteed to lose money.

The Seamaster I bought is the base model, standard 300m one (June 2000). Not a high cost to entry. Onega's have become more intricate, bigger and much more expensive since then. Maybe that's pulled the price of mine up?

I have a Seamaster and a PAM111. I love the Panerai as a contrast to my other watches (design/size/strap) but if I wouldn't choose it as an only watch. Omega is a safer bet for being liked and worn by your son in the future. My son wants an Omega. Panerai can be a bit Marmite. Values - who knows.

I'm sorry but I still think that the added criteria of an 'investment' is dragging you away from the main reason for the purchase.

All swiss watches will be worth 'something' in years to come. Hardly any will be worth more than you paid for them unless you are lucky enough to score a SS Rolex right now.

The investment is compromising your choice IMO, sorry.

Hard to go wrong with a Speedmaster or Seamaster.
I've had both and have a couple of Panerai. The only negatives about the Panerai are they are big bulky items. Polished stainless one pick up scratches for fun too. My PAM111 is a magnet for little scratches for some reason.
Lume on Panerai (especially sandwich dial models) is amazing.

I reckon i’ll always have a Panerai in my collection, it’s such a different thing from every other watch I’ve ever had, something about the shape and size and obscurity of it, makes it loads of fun to wear.

Go for it. Forget about resale.

Panerai's are such marmite watches. Many many people don't like them, but if you do, there is nothing else quite like them.
I have a 111, a 196 and a 162. Love them all. I agree that they are not everyday watches, unless you wear jeans and T every day, but they are just special.
Omegas are lovely, but just don't have the same 'wrist presence' that the PAMs do.
Go for the Sandwich dial if that is an option. Spectacular.

I have a Pam 564 titanium - bit of a different look to high polished stuff. Love it and works great with jeans/t shirt which is my daily wardrobe!

Have had a few omegas in the past but they never quite did it for me the way this does...just love it.

What about a smaller size Panerai. The did some 40mm versions which are more rare and are holding value better than some of the 44mm+ watches. If you prefer the style of Panerai, then maybe this is the way to go.

Otherwise, as it's been said, you can't go wrong with a regular moon watch. It will always be a classic, it's very versatile - looks great on a nato, leather or steel bracelet.
