Due to a watch loss (Tag Carrera Twin Time) I have a voucher to buy a watch from Goldsmiths for £2400.00

It does not allow purchase of a Rolex and a few other brands, so allows TAG, Breitling, that kind of thing.

However apart from a Rolex Submariner there is nothing I am really that bothered about.

So two question really I guess, am I missing something around that price that is of actual value or quality.

Or what would be the best choice to sell on to realise the cash to put somewhere else, cash settlement from Insurance Co was only around £1400.00

Sell the voucher for £2300, you get a good chunk and they save £100?

Stick the voucher on eBay for £2,160.

Yeah, that was my first thought.

Should have explained. Its a "hallmark" voucher in my name and they need two forms of ID to use.

Ill Have to read the small print maybe there is a way around it.

What would you be doing with the cash once you’ve sold whatever you don’t want?
If you’d actually put the extra in for a Sub there may be an option.

I was a manager with Goldsmiths some years ago. Insurance vouchers back then were incredibly difficult to refund, as once the vouchers gone through the payments collected from the insurers and all’s settled. If you’d bought a watch for eg £3000 and wanted to return it you’d get a credit note to save partial cash/partial insurance voucher return. The credit note could then be used towards a Rolex deposit.

Things may have changed, but a friendly branch manager might tell you the score.. it’s an extra £4K in their till which is all they’ll be bothered about.

Maybe a bit off topic but what is a "watch loss" -stolen, broken, something else?

Where is this Rolex AD with subs sat there ready to be bought for a start and then you want to try and give them a voucher that isn't redeemable against the watch? (which won't be available) It'll be a short conversation.

OP if you want a quality watch then put a few quid towards a speedmaster moon watch an utter classic with all the quality and heritage for a good price they should knock 10% off the £3600 model it'll be harder to get more off as its a voucher.

I would probably order the new Black Bay Bronze grey version, I bet you would see most of your money back on that pretty quickly.

Weird, i thought I posted how it’d work and that the credit would be towards a deposit, rather than part payment for a watch that’s in stock. Never mind, it must have come across differently to you.

Why though?

The insurance company do a deal and get a discount, hence no Rolex.

Deposit is part payment.

I'm sure if you put it up for sale on a watch forum or ebay stating that you would have to go with the purchaser due to the id issue it wouldn't be a problem. It would also give the buy piece of mind that the voucher is genuine, would offer to buy it myself, but have been told to slim down the collection haha

A bit off topic, but regarding a bit of rule bending by staff in watch shops. When I bought my Moon Watch I asked the girl for cash discount. It was just into the New Year and I guessed they would be slack and looking for sales. She said no. Adamant. Company policy, blah, blah. On my way out, watchless, I was intercepted by a considerably older guy who asked if he could help. I explained my cash discount theory and he was only too happy to oblige. He did a special order; the actual watch I bought wasn't in stock. It was 10% off I think but had a proper warranty and all. Not a huge discount, but worth having - a few hundred quid. My point is, I agree with the ideas above that the rules on how the voucher can be redeemed might be more flexible than you think.

I agree they will be flexible, but on a Rolex Submariner?

Dealers can't get them, they have people waiting on lists. £6500 with no discount and limited to one watch a month.

The vouchers worth £2400 will have around £3-400 discount on them. Sure it is not much, but they will sell the Sub anyway, and that gives them a chance to sell the voucher holder something else.

Using the same New Year slack sales ploy, I managed to get a discount on a Rolex Oyster for my wife. I mentioned it in here once and had to post a pic of the receipt before some people believed me. Maybe certain models they won't budge on, but it has to be worth a shot.

Why not buy a dress or aviator or more modern design? It would be a nice complementary watch to the ubiquitous Sub. And in the mean time, maybe the Rolex craze will have worn off and you can actually buy one!

Longines make some lovely stuff and they had already been around for 60 years when Rolex started in London.
Monblanc watches look fantastic in the metal.
Mühle or NOMOS Glashütte do some more modern and nautical designs. You get a lot of German quality for your (or the insurance companies) money!

Would the voucher allow you to buy a pre-owned watch?

Goldsmiths have a decent selection on-line as well as in the stores, if you can use the voucher on one of those, you'll get much more back if you try and sell it later.

Someone I knew was in a similar position 8 years ago, having an insurance payout gift voucher for a stolen watch, and no desire to buy a new one. He knew I was "into" watches, so he offered the voucher to me for a fair chunk off face value. He ordered the watch I wanted, and we went to collect it together. Popped into the bank next door, I drew out the cash and paid him.

Everyone was happy, no risk of getting ripped off.

Watch in question was a Hulk, back in the day when they only took a few weeks to find in the dealer network, and I saved over a grand.

Cheers all.
No genuine (easy) solution it seems for cash towards a rolex.

Some good recomendations though, liking the moon watch idea. And some brands I never thought off.

The person in the shop did tell me about waiting lists and preffered customers for Rolexs, as people were flipping them, thought it was nonsense but clearly not...I think my preference would have been 2nd hand any how.

I have 3 months so no hardship to do some research, read the forum and get something nice.

Cheers.

Does it have to be a watch? Do goldsmiths sell gold sovereigns? Would it be worth getting a couple of plain 18ct wedding bands and selling them by weight to a dealer?

You would lose most of the face value of the voucher doing this
