A recent acquisition for wifey seems to be above the limit set by our household insurers and they have stated that they wont insure it, even for an additional premium (it's a big name insurer so I was a little surprised!). Wifey wants to be able to wear it when we go away and not worry about it when we are at home. Any experts here who know what might be my best move? There are plenty of specialist jewellery insurers but I haven't heard of any of them so have no idea which way to turn.

Many thanks for your ideas/recommendations.

I had a similar issue, where you end up going to specialists for dedicated insurance for watches, rings etc.. I actually used Direct Line Select cover, which is more of a premium for buildings and contents, however covers more expensive one off items.

I havent heard of this as a problem before.

Most insurers give unspecified cover for jewellery up to a certain figure, typically £2000-£4000. anything above that needs to be specified with a description, it would be a good idea to provide the receipt and a photograph of the item. If you cannot provide a receipt you may have difficulty for high value items.

Phone again, say if they wont provide cover then you would like the reasons why in writing as you may be making a complaint.

We do ours through NFU but Hiscocks were recommended as well. Our policy includes all my tools as at £20k they are outside a normal policy for home insurance.

Just get a better home insurance policy. Standalone cover is hideously expensive IME.

I would agree. I was quoted £350ish to cover a watch, have renewed my home and contents with Liverpool Victoria with a few specified items for £280.

Ask what happens if you fit a safe. Our insurer made us fit a safe when we went over £X in watches. Now can just add as necessary because we have the safe.

Thanks for the varied responses. I am going to transfer my home insurance to another firm I think. I don't think a safe will cover wanting to wear the item whilst abroad. The current insurers wont insure it and there is no real reason to complain as it wont change anything, other than my blood pressure. I shall just need to do some research and see what I can come up with.

Thanks all!

I've had no problems insuring specific items. It's usually if an individual item is of a higher value than £1500k I think. If you go on the Meerkat, you can list those specific items and add their values then it all goes into the premium calcs that come back.

My current insurers cover individual items both at home and when taken away from home. This item is more than £3k north of the level of individual item cover and now that I have told them about it they will not cover it, even up to the level of an individual items and even though it is less than the certified valuation - which is not what I paid for it!

As a result I shall have to move my insurance elsewhere. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

The policy should cover wearing abroad. But if not being worn and left unattended then secured in a safe either in the hotel or at home.

Try Chubb

I had some watches stolen whilst travelling last month and they were brilliant.
