I know this forum is mainly about modern stuff, but can anyone identify this watch which dates from WW2 ?

It was presented to my late father by his CO during his service in India, as a reward for exemplary conduct during the RAF "mutiny" in 1946. I believe it could be American, quite possibly standard issue to lower-ranking officers. I doubt they would have given watches to other ranks. The watch was part of a cargo of "goodies" on a USAAF Liberator which makes me think it's not a British make.

No intrinsic value, I'm sure, but I've often wondered what it was. My nephew has it now, he's a Wing Commander, and shown wearing it in the Memorial Flight Lancaster.

Oddly enough, I haven't seen him or spoken to him for about 12 years. We are not a close family. I think you're right, but I'd feel a prat trying to get in touch with him just to ask that. It was just curiosity that made me post this question. Not important in the whole scale of life.

If it's US issue then I'd suspect it's a Hamilton

US watches were made by Bulova (probably greatest number), Hamilton and Elgin/Gruen.

That looks like none of them.

I'd hazard a guess it's an Avia watch (can almost make out the name on the face).
