Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but if not, hopefully it can be moved to the correct place.

I have some money to spend on a nice pen, as a result of my father passing away. I can spend anywhere between £100 and £2,000 but don't feel compelled to spend anywhere near the maximum amount.

I'm more interested in a nice pen that is good to use, than something that is flashy and looks expensive. I'd rather pay for subtle quality than for a popular brand name, assuming that they are two different things!

TIA

Bob.

What a shame you didn't post a week ago,Sotherbys had a auction of watches and pens last week! There were some very nice Mont Blanc pens in there. Why don't you go on there website and see if there's any unsold stuff? It was in New York,i think it was on the 21st.

I'm not a expert but try going on the auction results part and if there are any lots they say unsold give them a call? The auction was called "the class of 2019" in New York.

What type of pen? I bought a beautiful fountain from New York a few years back and have never used it!

It's a Cross C Series as below.

By all means make me an offer if you like it and want to keep to the lower end of the budget but get great VFM.

Mont Blanc. They do ranges of special editions, keep an eye out and see if any suit you. Otherwise Fountain/Rollerball combo is great. Midnight Blue ink!

If you're anywhere near the midlands try The pen Shop in the Great Northern Arcade off Colmore Row. Great selection and friendly knowledgeable staff.

Every bugger has a Mont Blanc. Have a look at Dunhill. I have two, both biros, that are in constant, daily use; a Sidecar and a Torpedo. Beautifully crafted and a joy to hold.

Mont Blanc are seriously overrated IMO.

Take a look at Montegrappa in addition to what others have said.

I used to own one of these, it was absolutely perfect to hold.

What do you currently write with? Because I wouldn't advise you go down the fountain pen route with an expensive 'starter'.

OP - sorry for your loss.

It's a good question and for the first time I feel i can maeningfully contribute to the Watches forum. hehe

As said above, every bugger has a Mont Blanc, and while they're wonderful pens they're in the same sort of category (for me) as Rolex / Porsche etc. By this I mean they're beautifully engineered things and a joy in their on right to an enthusiast, but they're also well known brands that people with big wallets can use to show off.

Based on that my advice would be either Pelikan - perhaps an M800. People who are into pens view this as one of, if not the finest fountain pen in the world. Beautifully made with a brass piston and writes beautifully. They come in several finishes too. Link is below.

Pelikan

I have two Pelikan FPs - an M400 white tortoise and an M200 Cafe Creme. I adore both and the M800 is probably my grail pen.

Alternatively how about a Visconti homo Sapiens. A bit unusual and made from basalt - stops your hands getting sweaty.

Visconti Homo Sapiens

Good luck and let us know what you chose.

Yes, good point. The Graf von Faber Castell lines are the premium version and are absolutely lovely.

Our crew hotel in Hannover is the former Pelikan pen factory. They always have a little display of the current wares in reception. Very nice-looking things!

I have a Porsche and Rolex, and consider myself an enthusiast, rather than a show off, but I understand what you mean.

I had Mont Blanc in a similar category, hence looking for a wider range of options.

I will investigate these options, thanks.

Strategically placed to avoid showing company logo!

I don’t need to write much, but would like something nice to use when I comment on documents etc!

Thanks to everyone who has replied with various suggestions - I read them last night and started to look into the different options, but the forum software was apparently blocking replies from new members.
