Decent fake v real Daytona comparison vid
Discussion
Interesting watchfinder post comparing fake Daytona with real. Not wanting to re-ignite the debate, just thought it was a decent comparison video.

Some of the replicas coming out of China at the moment is absolutely amazing. Their motivation to achieve a high quality perfect product is getting to the point where they are approaching gen quality. The give-away was always the movement. If they are starting to rep that then I'm not sure what can be done.Quite depressing really........

It boggles my mind that there’s seemingly a market for £1,000 fake Rolex’s. Who the hell drops that sort of cash on a fake, and why? You can get some extremely nice genuine timepieces for that sort of bunce, especially secondhand.
Looking at it unemotionally: it looks the same, performs the same function, is made of the same materials. Just at a lower quality which is now very difficult to spot (I watched the video). Seems like a bargain, you're not paying for £3k of advertising.Fast and Spurious said:

But a fake is instantly worthless, regardless of how much it’s bought for. The more you spend on it, the more of a ridiculous waste it is.dvs_dave said:

Maybe, but if you've bought it to wear as a watch, and not worry about its worth? With a different name, but everything else unchanged, how much would it be worth? Genuine question to you folks that may have the knowledge. Objectively it looks pretty decent quality to me.

I'm no expert but that dial wasn't even close. The smeary red 'Daytona' was a dead giveaway.
Thats nonsense. In isolation, you wouldn't have a fecking clue.Within about 10 seconds I had a strong feeling of which was which. Within 30 I was sure, the clarity of the script, the bezel engraving, the finish of the metal parts. I'm not a Rolex expert, but it was quickly obvious which was which.
But that was side by side on a 24inch monitor at 1080p. Which is equivalent to what, a 10x loupe? And unlike a loupe I could see both at teh same time. If you'd have given me that fake to examine with the naked eye and with nothing to compare against I wouldn't have been able to tell.
Having watched the video, using a loupe, I now could tell. The riveted ends holding the centre seconds hands and the subdial hands are shonky. But how long will it take our Chinese watchmakers to sort that out? The fonts aren't great and neither is the bezel, but I'd need a real example to compare against to be sure of detecting the fake.
I wonder what effect the availability of fakes like this will have on the second hand market? If enough of these hit the market, the inability to spot the difference between a fake and a real watch could burst the current bubble.
Such a shame that they couldn't focus all that talent at making something original.
A stupid question so am expecting some abuse but it's a genuine question. As said quality of fakes is improving obviously, but are these fakes readily available to purchase in London. Admittedly I don't work in Central London but in my frequent visits I haven't seen many selling fake watches...

They’re available from Chinese websites. It’s illegal to sell fakes in shops in the uk.xyz123 said:

That’s where the Chinese fakes are really clever. They are unavailable just like the genuine ones. They have, in certain examples, produced original (ish) designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and work well.
My Parnis diver has a bit of Omega PloProf and Doxa Shark about it, but isn’t a direct homage. It’s well finished (although the original strap was pretty pants) and I enjoy wearing it.
They make more money out of the direct copies and fakes, hence why they do it.
Picture of my Parnis below if anyone is interested. A few of us on here have bought one.
